Epidural insertion simulator of higher insertion resistance & drop rate after puncture.
Accidents such as dural puncture remain one of the problems of epidural anesthesia, and unskilled doctors can repeat such accidents. The purpose of the current research was to provide a new simulator for epidural insertion training. No reference data regarding the resistance force used when inserting a needle into patients have been reported. ⋯ The insertion resistances were 2.5 N/s for the porcine, 0.8 N/s for the conventional and 2.1 N/s for the new simulator. The drop rates were 5 N/s for the porcine, 0.6 N/s for the conventional and 24 N/s for the new simulator. The higher insertion resistance and drop rate for the new simulator than the conventional simulator will be suitable for epidural insertion training.

Preliminary study on physiological changes of hemorrhagic shock in rats.
Hemorrhagic shock is a common cause of death in emergency rooms. The objective evaluation of hemorrhagic shock is very important for early diagnosis and treatment. ⋯ We constructed an integrated system to be able to control bleeding and to simultaneously measure bio-signals such as ECG, blood pressure, temperature, and respiration. In order to verify the system, we measured the bio-signals mentioned above while hemorrhagic shock was induced by withdrawing blood (2.5 ml / 100 g / 15 min) from a femoral vein for 10 rats.

A two-stage approach to positioning and identification of tracheal intubation using LED-based lightwand and acoustic models.
This paper proposes a two-stage approach to positioning and identifying tracheal intubations by computer-assisted diagnosis system. First, an innovated LED-based lightwand is developed for positioning the opening of the trachea and inserting the endotracheal tube rapidly. The proposed LED-based lightwand instrument significantly reduces the effects of temperature reaction without changing transillumination through the tissue. ⋯ Several subjective and objective experiments are performed to examine the practicability of the proposed approach and systems. The preliminary results show that the proposed LED-based lightwand instrument outperformed in the tip temperature without the influence on transillumination. The proposed parameters of average vibration parameter variance (AVPV) and frequency-domain energy variance (FEV) revealed the potential for distinguishing between the tracheal and esophageal intubations.

Thermal effect of sonophoresis for accelerating the analgesic effect of local anesthetics on rat tail nerve.
Sonophoresis is an ultrasound transdermal drugs delivery system. The eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) has been used clinically for anesthesia but requires at least one hour to take effect and lacks of analgesia's objective assessment. We proposed that sonophoresis could reduce the duration of EMLA analgesia effect onset and be assessed by sensory conduction studies. ⋯ We have objectively examined the sonophoresis effect of ultrasound by investigating the effects of EMLA. Applying ultrasound for 5 min reduces the onset time of EMLA analgesia from 60 min to less than 20 min. Ultrasound sonophoresis of analgesic drugs is potentially useful in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome, tooth extraction, and other applications of analgesia.
