We aim to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the prognostic value of decompressive craniectomy (DC) in patients with traumatic intracranial hypertension. PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, Web of Science, http://clinicaltrials.gov/ were searched for eligible studies. ⋯ Results from observational studies supported pooled results except prolonged length of ICU and hospital stay. Conclusively, DC seemed to effectively lower ICP, reduce mortality rate but increase complications rate, while its benefit on functional outcomes was not statistically significant.

A systemic review and an updated meta-analysis: minimally invasive vs open pancreaticoduodenectomy.
The feasible of minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy (MIPD) remains controversial when compared with open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD). We conducted a systemic review and meta-analysis to summarise the available evidence to compare MIPD vs OPD. We systemically searched PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science for studies published through February 2016. ⋯ Although there was an increased operative cost (P < 0.01) for MIPD compared with OPD, the postoperative cost was less (P < 0.01) with the similar total costs (P = 0.28). MIPD can be a reasonable alternative to OPD with the potential advantage of being minimally invasive. However, MIPD should be performed in high-volume centers and more randomized-controlled trials are needed to evaluate the appropriate indications of MIPD.

Adductor canal block versus femoral nerve block for total knee arthroplasty: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Femoral nerve blocks (FNB) can provide effective pain relief but result in quadriceps weakness with increased risk of falls following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Adductor canal block (ACB) is a relatively new alternative providing pure sensory blockade with minimal effect on quadriceps strength. The meta-analysis was designed to evaluate whether ACB exhibited better outcomes with respect to quadriceps strength, pain control, ambulation ability, and complications. ⋯ At any follow-up time, ACB was not inferior to FNB regarding pain control or opioid consumption, and showed better range of motion in comparison with FNB. ACB is superior to the FNB regarding sparing of quadriceps strength and faster knee function recovery. It provides pain relief and opioid consumption comparable to FNB and is associated with decreased risk of falls.

Serum soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor as a biological marker of bacterial infection in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The serum concentration of soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) reflects immune activation. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the usefulness of suPAR for the diagnosis and prognosis of bacterial infections. PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched for studies reporting the detection of suPAR in adult patients with bacterial infections. ⋯ The pooled sensitivity and specificity for predicting mortality were 0.70 and 0.72, respectivfely, with an AUC of 0.77. Serum suPAR could be a biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of bacterial infection, but it is relatively ineffective for differentiating sepsis from SIRS. Further investigation is required to evaluate whether using of suPAR in combination with other biomarkers can improve diagnostic efficacy.

The Prognostic Value of PLR in Lung Cancer, a Meta-analysis Based on Results from a Large Consecutive Cohort.
Recently, many studies have been conducted to explore prognostic value of platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) for patients with lung cancer, while the results remain controversial. We collected pretreatment, clinicopathological and follow-up data of 1388 lung cancer patients receiving surgery between 2006 and 2011 in our hospital, and reviewed relevant articles from Embase, Pubmed, Web of science databases, then performed a meta-analysis to clarify the relationship between PLR and prognosis of lung cancer patients. Finally, 11 articles with our study were included, results indicated elevated PLR was negatively related to overall survival (HR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.10-1.62), but not related to progress-free survival (HR = 1.21, 95% CI: 0.97-1.49). ⋯ Besides, for patients treated by chemotherapy or radiotherapy (HR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.15-2.38) and patients in late stage (HR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.19-1.68), PLR had significantly prognostic value. Additionally, the result was significant for patients when cut-off value of PLR was between 150 and 200 (HR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.18-1.82). In Conclusion, this meta-analysis revealed that elevated PLR was associated with poor prognosis in lung cancer.
