Comparative Study[Stage at diagnosis of prostate cancer in an institutional hospital. Review and comparison of national and international data].
Prostate cancer (PCa) is a disease with a high prevalence and incidence worldwide. Screening has pursued the early diagnosis of this disease to provide early treatment. We sought to characterize patients from a local hospital with respect to diagnosis and staging and to compare these results with previously reported data. ⋯ The stage at diagnosis in our series is somewhat higher than that reported by developed countries but considerably lower than that published by other Latin American countries and even from other hospitals in our country. It is of great national relevance to have clear protocols for screening and access to PSA to reduce the cases diagnosed in advanced stages.

Historical Article[Beginning of the teaching of Physiology in Chile].
This work intends to present the beginning and early development of physiological studies in Chile. Physiology, as a scientific discipline, began to be taught from the moment the School of Medicine was founded in 1833, closely associated with anatomy and hygiene. The three disciplines were taught by the same professor. ⋯ Vicente Padín del Valle. In a second period (1868-1901), the teaching of physiology was severely weakened, as it was taught by various clinicians who did not know this discipline in depth. After this initial period (1833-1900), which we could call the theoretical stage, the so-called experimental physiology was born, which, through classes with experimental demonstrations and then practical work, tried to bring the student closer to the reality of the physiological phenomenon.

[Functional tests in older adults: a cross-sectional study comparing subjects with and without history of falls].
Functional tests are a fundamental axis in assessing the risk of falls in older adults. However, many of them lack associative value with the actual functional status of the older adults, medical history, and comorbidities. ⋯ The three functional tests applied show associative values in falling older adults. The grip strength presented associative value with the functional tests.

[Budget impact analysis of the implementation of a bone tissue bank in a Chilean health service].
This research aimed to analyze the costs of bone grafting through a bone tissue bank in a Chilean regional health service. Methods: First, we developed a preliminary epidemiological study to obtain the necessary data for the analysis, specifically on bone graft procedures in a local health service (Servicio Salud Concepción). Next, we performed a budget impact analysis. ⋯ Based on these results, bone tissue banks could save USD$145,000 hospital costs annually. Studying a representative health service from Chile, this analysis revealed a dependency on imported bone substitutes and autografts. These requirements can be supplied sustainably by a bone tissue bank based on donations of femoral heads under the current legislation of the Chilean health authority.
