The entity of sudden cardiac death in young athletes has been known since the year 490 B. C. when young Greek soldier Phidipides had run the distance from Marathon to Athens and suddenly fell down dead. In the last twenty years, sudden death of famous athletes have attracted huge attention of medical and social community; afterwards both American and European Cardiology Societies started to publish periodically guidelines for preparticipation screening. ⋯ Unrecognized congenital cardiovascular abnormalities associated with excessive physical effort create background for electrophysiological instability and occurrence of malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmia and consequent death. The most frequent causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, anomalies of the coronary arteries and idiopathic left ventricular hypertrophy. Current ACC/AHA & ESC guidelines should be widely used in order to reduce potential sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

Acute poisonings with corrosive substances make 15-20% of all acute poisonings in our country. They are on the second place, after drug poisonings, which are far more often. After the ingestion of corrosives, corrosive lesions of the gastrointestinal tract appear. ⋯ It is important to identify the kind and quantity of ingested substance, as well as to withhold all oral feedings, and to assess fluid and electrolyte balance carefully and to watch for development of complications. This paper presents the complete treatment protocol of ENT Clinic, Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Serbia. This protocol has been in use since the year 2000 and the results are excellent.

High Frequency Jet Ventilation is one in a group of alternative ventilatory techniques characterized by the application of small tidal volumes delivered at higher than physiological rates, followed by the passive expiration. There are two groups of indications: first, High Frequency Jet ventilation was used as a special ventilation mode during diagnostic or surgical procedures in patients with airway pathology; and second, High Frequency Jet Ventilation was employed as a respiratory support technique to improve gas exchange during severe pulmonary failure in infants, children and adults. Diagnostic or surgery laryngoscopy requires a method that can give good exposure of the larynx, continuing control of the airway patency and immobility of the vocal cords. ⋯ Jet ventilation via a catheter placed through the cricothyroid membrane, is an easy and safe way to ventilate patients with an abnormality of the upper airway, such as in cases of head and neck cancer. Inappropriate airway pressure monitoring and/or an insufficient expiratory airflow enhances the risk of pulmonary barotrauma. Despite a large body of published evidence describing its benefits as an alternative ventilatory approach in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine, its application has not gained widespread acceptance and is restricted to specialized centres only.

The prevalence of migraine in childhood and adolescence has not changed to a great extent, but it increases in adolescence, especially in female adolescents. MENSTRUAL MIGRAINE--DEFINITION: There are two types of menstrual migraine: true menstrual migraine and menstrually related migraine. True menstrual migraine occurs predominantly around menstruation, whereas menstrually related migraine occurs during menstruation, but also at other times during the month. ⋯ Hormonally associated migraine is a specific clinical entity. It is important to diagnose the type of migraine, considering the fact that a decline in estrogen level at the end of menstrual cycle triggers migraine, so it can be treated by low levels of estrogen.

Accurate evaluation and correct treatment of neonates for possible sepsis still represent the most challenging clinical tasks. Early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis is largely based on the measurement of serum concentrations of different mediators of systemic inflammation, as well as, on a group of proteins named acute phase reactants. Among acute phase reactants, C-reactive protein (CRP) has been the most extensively used and investigated so far. ⋯ In conclusion, we point to the diagnostic accuracy of serial measurements of serum CRP levels. As an alternative, simultaneous measurement of CRP and serum levels using a faster marker, such as procalcitonin, is recommended.
