Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a frequent complication in postoperative period. The aim of the current meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy of dexmedetomidine on PONV. ⋯ The present meta-analysis indicates that dexmedetomidine shows superiority to placebo, but not to all other anesthetic agents on PONV. And this efficacy may be related to a reduced consumption of intraoperative opioids.

Impulse oscillometry (IOS) is a good method for measuring airway resistance. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic contribution of IOS combined with bronchial dilation test (BDT) when distinguishing between patients with asthma and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 870 were enrolled in the study including 561 patients with asthma, 100 patients with COPD and 209 patients with chronic coughing or normal subjects. All the participants underwent routine pulmonary function tests, IOS and BDT examination. ⋯ Our findings show, that X5, X25 and Fres may be useful for predictions and evaluations for COPD. And R5, X35 and Zrs may provide useful IOS parameters for asthma. IOS combined BDT could be useful diagnostic and differential diagnosis between asthma and COPD.

Balloon kyphoplasty has been shown to be safe in treatment of vertebral compression fractures refractory to conservative management. However, few reports have focused on lateral wedging of cemented vertebra after kyphoplasty. A 72-year-old woman with a T12 osteoporotic compression fracture underwent kyphoplasty using polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) via a bipedicular approach. ⋯ Twelve months later, lateral wedging of the cemented vertebra was detected in plain radiographs. In the kyphoplasty procedure, symmetric cement filling should be achieved to avoid lateral wedging of the cemented vertebra. Postoperative anti-osteoporotic medication treatment is also very important.

To investigate the effects of two different inhalation anesthetic expelling methods on emergence agitation in infants following sevoflurane anesthesia. ⋯ Postoperative agitation is prone to occur in patients with sevoflurane concentration decreasing expelling. Avoiding sevoflurane application maintenance in the stage of sevoflurane expelling reduces the occurrence of postoperative agitation and diminishes physiological and psychological harm.

Although quantitative computed tomography (CT) has been used to analyze the lungs of patients with confirmed diagnoses of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), there are few reports to show the diagnosis during the early stage of ARDS. Using a canine model and quantitative CT, we aimed to develop an oleic acid (OA) induced ARDS regarding the early stage of ARDS that could improve in the early diagnosis of ARDS. ⋯ Quantitative CT analysis can detect ARDS at an early stage with high sensitivity and specificity, providing a minimum of assistance in the early diagnosis of ARDS.
