Calciphylaxis, also known as calcific uremic arteriolopathy, is a rare, but often fatal condition involving vascular calcification that can result in tissue ischemia and cutaneous necrosis. It is most often seen in patients with renal failure among many other occasionally reported etiologies. Below, we present a rare and challenging case of calciphylaxis involving the glans penis and right leg in a man with end stage renal disease on hemodialysis.

ReviewNon-tuberculous mycobacterium skin infections after tattooing in healthy individuals: A systematic review of case reports.
In recent years, several case reports and outbreaks reported occurrence of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections within 6 months after receiving a tattoo in healthy individuals. NTM species (e.g., Chelonae, Fortuitum, Hemophillum, and Abscessus) are widespread in the environment and it is often suspected that contamination may occur through unsterile instrumentation or unsterile water used for diluting tattoo ink to dilute color. In reported cases, lesions were mainly restricted to a single color 'gray' part of the tattoo. ⋯ Less than 50% of the case reports tested tattoo ink for acid fast bacilli stains and cultures. Subjects required treatment with either clarithromycin alone or in combination with quinolones for 6 to 9 months. An increase in NTM skin infections in healthy individuals after tattooing indicates the need for sterile standards during tattooing and improved local and regional regulatory oversight.

Worn-down nail syndrome is a nail disorder characterized by thinning of the distal nail plate caused by repetitive chemical or mechanical trauma. We present a previously undescribed source of worn-down nail syndrome caused by trauma from nail filing after acrylic nail removal.

Review Case ReportsEccrine chromhidrosis secondary to hyperbilirubinemia.
Eccrine chromhidrosis, or colored eccrine sweating, may be caused by contamination of sweat by dyes, pigmentation from microorganisms, or more rarely, hyperbilirubinemia. Pigment usually affects the palms and soles, where abundant sweat glands are found.Purpose, Material and Methods: We report a unique case of eccrine chromhidrosis in the setting of hyperbilirubinemia and review the current literature available on PubMed of previously reported cases. ⋯ Eccrine chromhidrosis secondary to hyperbilirubinemia is very rare, but can be diagnosed on the basis of classic clinical findings, dermoscopic examination, and negative tissue cultures.

LetterNews reports: update on buying indoor UV tanning with university debit cards.
Indoor tanning by adults under 35 years of age increases the risk of developing melanoma 59% to 75%. Cost is a major barrier limiting young adults from purchasing indoor tanning services. Our recent study by Boyers et al determined that 18 of 96 major universities, all in the eastern and southern United States, had university-sponsored debit cards with indoor tanning affiliations. These debit cards, which conveniently link with student identification (ID) cards, help with student living expenses and are often loaded with money by parents. By creating agreements with indoor tanning salon vendors, universities are endorsing a World Health Organization class I carcinogen. To expand the results of our previous study, we broadened our search to further assess universities in the western United States as well as Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, and the United Kingdom. ⋯ Our findings indicate that the formation of financial agreements between universities and tanning salons is an ever-present and growing problem in the United States. Since Boyers et al, we have engaged in outreach efforts with alumni, faculty, administration, and local university cancer centers to terminate university ties with tanning salon vendors. Further advocacy efforts are critical to combat this dangerous association, reduce the frequency of skin cancer, and protect the health of young adults.
