Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a major hyperglycemic emergency in diabetes mellitus (DM). The basic treatment is injection of Regular insulin (RI). This study was aimed to investigate the effects of insulin Glargine (GI) on recovery of patients with DKA. ⋯ Adding GI to the standard treatment of DKA reduced average time of recovery from DKA, without incurring episodes of hypoglycemia and hypokalemia. This also reduced in the time of recovery from DKA, amount of required insulin and the duration of hospitalization. It seems that the non-significant difference in the time of recovery from DKA be related to the small sample size and study design. Further studies are recommended.

Infra orbital nerve block is utilized for postoperative pain control in children undergoing cleft lip repair. This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness, advantages and disadvantages of infra orbital nerve block and opioids for postoperative pain relief following cheiloplasty. ⋯ The results indicate that bilateral infra orbital nerve block provides effective analgesia in the postoperative period, lasting for 6 hours in comparison to 3½ - 4 hours following the administration of intravenous Pentazocine, with no major untoward effects.

Hospital triage scale in emergency departments needs to be valid and reliable. Lack of sufficient data exists on triage scale rigor in emergency departments of Iran. This study aimed to determine the impact of the emergency severity index (ESI) triage scale in the emergency department. ⋯ The ESI as valid and reliable tool improving desirable outcomes` in the emergency department has been recommended but it may not reveal optimal outcomes in developing countries comparing to what have been achieved in the developed countries. In addition, patient influx in ESI level II could create considerable controversy with clinicians.

Anterior dislocation of shoulder account for more than 50% of dislocation that occur in our body. Several methods of reduction are described in literature which are painful or require anaesthesia. ⋯ Both methods of reduction can be used for reduction of anterior dislocation of shoulder without anaesthesia but external rotation method was found to be easier and less painful.

Currently applications of artificial neural network (ANN) models in outcome predicting of patients have made considerable strides in clinical medicine. This project aims to use a neural network for predicting survival and length of stay of patients in the ward and the intensive care unit (ICU) of trauma patients and to obtain predictive power of the current method. ⋯ Using ANN model based on clinical and biochemical variables in patients with moderate to severe traumatic injury, resulted in satisfactory outcome prediction when applied to a test set.
