Delirium is a disturbance of consciousness, cognition and perception that occurs frequently in medically ill patients. Although it is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, it is often not recognised. Predisposing factors are believed to have multiplicative effects and include dementia, advanced age and male gender. ⋯ Although it has been shown to be efficacious, the prevention of delirium is underutilised. Prevention consists of aggressive management of known risk factors and early detection. The intervention had not always significant effect on the severity of delirium or on recurrence rates; this finding suggests that primary prevention of delirium is probably the most effective treatment strategy.

Subclinical hypothyroidism is defined as normal serum free thyroxine and tri-iodothyronine concentrations and a slightly eleveted serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentration. Only laboratory results can detect this disorder. ⋯ Most patients with subclinical hypothyroidism should be treated with thyroxine aiming to reduce the patient's serum TSH concentration to normal. Treatment will prevent progression to overt hypothyroidism and in some cases ameliorate non specific symptoms and lipid profile.

Linezolid is a novel antibiotic administrable by the intravenous as well as the oral route. It is aimed by its re-imbursement conditions at treating proven beta-lactam- or glycopeptide-resistant staphylococcal and enterococcal infections in the hospital and post-discharge outpatient. ⋯ The oral forms exhibit complete bio-availability. Caution is recommended with regard to linezolid's MAO inhibitory effect and the risk of thrombocytopenia requiring weekly hematologic monitoring.

The initial development of cardiac surgery at Erasme Hospital was closely related to the achievements in thoracic organ transplantation, with numerous synergies between other clinical and research units of the Faculty of Medicine. New advances in biology and biotechnology have met the challenges of modern cardiology, in the fields of advanced heart failure, refractory angina, rhythm disturbances or minimally invasive surgery. Fundamental aspects of clinical practice have been the subject of laboratory investigations, resulting in fruitful interactions and promising scientific outlooks.

Any general practitioner can be confronted with bleeding complication, the most frequent complication after a dental extraction. As with all complications prevention of bleeding is the best way to manage this problem. ⋯ The goal of this paper is to review the different steps of hemostasis as well as the most frequent anomalies associated to each step. The treatment will be discussed but it's more specific to specialists in odontostomatology.
