Insertion of temporary and tunneled catheters for hemodialysis in the internal jugular vein is a "gold standard". On the other hand, the supraclavicular approach to the subclavian vein was described by Yoffa in 1965. Despite its old invention, the latter technique has been well forgotten for unknown reasons. The aim of this study is to present our experience with the usage of the supraclavicular approach for insertion of temporary and tunneled catheters as vascular access for hemodialysis treatment. ⋯ We conclude that the supraclavicular approach to the subclavian vein is an easier, safer and practically more convenient method than cannulation of the IJV. The revisit of this approach demonstrates that it should be used more widely.

At present time, despite the progress made in the treatment of burn injuries, mortality rate among seriously ill patients remains high. The main causes of fatal cases with the extensive deep burns are generalized infectious complications, the major of which is sepsis. According to the authors, from 25 to 85% of deceased in later periods of burn injuries die from sepsis. The frequency and severity of infectious complications in patients with burn injuries requires an accurate diagnosis of infection that will determine the tactics of therapeutic and surgical treatment of such patients (Di Lonardo A. et al., 1993). However, the clinical diagnosis of wound infection in patients with burn injuries is quite difficult. ⋯ The application of NLR for the diagnosis of sepsis in patients with burn injuries is the option of choice, since its determination requires only the overall blood test.

Posterior circulation aneurysms account for approximately 30% of all intracranial aneurysms, and their rupture often causes aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Because surgical treatment of posterior circulation aneurysms is difficult, endovascular treatment is commonly indicated. However, simple coil embolization is associated with a high rate of recanalization. Our goal was to investigate morphometric aneurysmal features assessed on pre-embolization computed tomography angiography (CTA) as predictors of recanalization in patients with posterior circulation aneurysms. ⋯ Predictors of aneurysm recanalization can help choose best endovascular treatment strategies, which could reduce complication rates.

Surgical site infections on surgical wards are the most common cause of postoperative complications. Prevalence of surgical site infections depends on the surgical specialization. ⋯ The aim of the study was to assess prevalence and characteristics of surgical site infections caused by Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria from the family Eneterobacteriacae and Gram-positive cocci from the genus Staphylococcus in patients who underwent surgical procedures at the Regional Specialist Hospital named after M. Copernika in Łódź on selected surgical wards.

Breast cancer often requires combined oncologic treatments, the base of which is surgery. Quality of life (QoL) after each surgical procedure may influence the process of decision making among women, who qualify for multiple oncological strategies. ⋯ Results may differ, depending on country, culture, and societal relations. The aim of the study was to investigate the quality of life of Polish patients treated with breast-conserving therapy (BCT) or mastectomy with breast reconstruction.
