Due to its effects, like an exaggerated negative intrathoracic pressure, sympathetic activation, systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been involved as a cause in multiple cardiovascular diseases. These diseases include coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension (PH). Furthermore, OSA often coexists with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) in clinical practice. However, few studies focus on OSA and its relationship with CTEPH. This study aims to determine whether OSA has an influence on the clinic status of patients with CTEPH, and to identify what possible factors are associated with OSA in CTEPH. ⋯ OSA may aggravate the clinical status of CTEPH patients to some degree. In turn, a worse hemodynamics, oxygenation state and cardiac function are associated with OSA in CTEPH after being adjusted for age, sex and BMI. Among them, CI is the most important parameter in indicating the coexistence of OSA and CTEPH.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs have been reported to decrease complications and shorten hospital stays after lung resections, but their implementation requires time and financial investment with dedicated staff. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and economic outcomes of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) anatomical pulmonary resections before and after implementation of an ERAS program. ⋯ An ERAS program for VATS anatomical lung resection is cost-effective and is associated with a lower complication rate and a shorter postoperative hospitalization.

Technological improvement has contributed to making veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) safer and easier, spreading its use in acute respiratory failure (ARF). ⋯ More biocompatible and shorter drainage cannula may represent one of the contributing factors to a reduction in transfusions and costs of VV-ECMO in the current ongoing technological improvement in ECMO.

A decrease in serum albumin is commonly observed after lung cancer surgery, however, whether it is associated with postoperative outcomes is unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the reduction of serum albumin (ΔALB) on postoperative day one could serve as a predictor of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) after thoracoscopic anatomical resection in lung cancer patients. ⋯ A reduction of serum albumin with a cut-off value of 14.97% can be served as a predictor to identify patients at high risk of developing PPCs following thoracosopic anatomical lung cancer surgery.

The purpose of our study was to investigate the correlation between tumor volume (TV) and each subtype of thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) based on the World Health Organization (WHO) classification and Masaoka staging. ⋯ TV of invasive TETs may be larger at the time of initial presentation. TV >54.3 cm3 indicates invasive TETs.
