Reduction of pain from needle stick in the oral mucosa by topical anesthetics: a comparative study between lidocaine/prilocaine and benzocaine.
The aim of the study was to compare the analgesic effect of a topical benzocaine gel with that of a topical gel mixture of lidocaine/prilocaine (L/P). ⋯ Topical anesthetics based on a combination of lidocaine 2.5% + prilocaine 2.5% are significantly more effective than 20% benzocaine in reducing pain from needle stick in the maxillary vestibular mucosa.

Pain and anxiety reduction using a manual stimulation distraction device when administering local analgesia oro-dental injections: a multi-center clinical investigation.
This study was designed to assess the effects of a manual stimulating distraction device (Isoflex referred to as Manual Stimulation Distraction Device or MSDD) for reducing pain and anxiety experienced with standard dental local anesthetic injections. Additionally, the memory recall effects on injection pain and anxiety were also explored. ⋯ In this study, MSDD was effective at reducing pain and stress experienced with local regional analgesic injections.

Efficacy and tolerability of an intraoral benzocaine patch in the relief of spontaneous toothache pain.
In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, the effectiveness and tolerability of a novel intraoral benzocaine patch was evaluated in 60 patients who presented to the Dental School's emergency clinic with spontaneous toothache pain of at least a moderate intensity. ⋯ Although the results of the present study were promising, further research on this novel delivery system of benzocaine is warranted to firmly establish efficacy in patients with spontaneous toothache pain.

The prevention of induced stain using two levels of sodium hexametaphosphate in chewing gum.
This study was a randomized, controlled, examiner-blind, four-period crossover design that examined the prevention of induced stain deposition through the use of chewing gums containing either 2.0% or 3.0% sodium hexametaphosphate (Na Hex). ⋯ This study demonstrated that 2.0% and 3.0% levels of Na Hex in a chewing gum prevented the deposition of extrinsic dental stain better than a chewing gum without Na Hex, which in turn prevented the deposition of stain better than no chewing gum.

Caries prevention in Chinese children with sodium fluoride dentifrice delivered through a kindergarten-based oral health program in China.
Caries in China appears to be a significant problem, especially among preschool children. The effect of caries prevention in the primary teeth of preschool children through the use of fluoridated dentifrices and prevention programs has not been widely addressed. The purpose of this study was to examine the caries preventive effects of an 1100 ppm sodium fluoride dentifrice used in the context of a kindergarten-based oral health program compared to a matched placebo dentifrice in the absence of a kindergarten-based oral health program. ⋯ In Miyun county, the sodium fluoride/school program group had a 39.9% reduction in caries compared to the placebo/no program group that was statistically significant (p = 0.001). In Huairou county, the sodium fluoride/school program group had a 6.8% reduction in caries compared to the placebo/no program group that was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). These results demonstrate that fluoride in conjunction with increased dental awareness can deliver important reductions in caries in preschool children.
