Prospective double-blind randomised study of a new regimen of pre-emptive analgesia for inguinal hernia repair: evaluation of postoperative pain course.
To evaluate the effectiveness of a new regimen of pre-emptive analgesia on the development of postoperative pain after inguinal hernia repair. ⋯ This regimen of pre-emptive analgesia is an effective and safe method of reducing postoperative pain and analgesic consumption after inguinal hernia repair.

Laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy: a prospective randomised trial to compare postoperative pain, pulmonary function, and stress response.
Open cholecystectomy (OC) has been superseded by laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) for the treatment of cholelithiasis, although this fashion has not been validated by prospective studies. Our aim was to compare the two techniques. ⋯ LC gives significantly better results in terms of less postoperative pain, better pulmonary function, better arterial oxygenation, and shorter hospital stay and duration of sick leave.

Preoperative high dose methylprednisolone improves patients outcome after abdominal surgery.
To assess the effect of preoperative high dose methylprednisolone on stress response and outcome. ⋯ Outcome of the patients after conventional abdominal surgery is substantially improved by preoperative high dose methylprednisolone. This effect is more pronounced in patients having major operations.

Piperacillin/tazobactam compared with cefuroxime/ metronidazole in the treatment of intra-abdominal infections.
To assess the effect of piperacillin/tazobactam compared with cefuroxime/metronidazole in the treatment of patients with intra-abdominal infections. ⋯ Both piperacillin/tazobactam and cefuroxime/metronidazole are well suited to the treatment of patients with intra-abdominal infections, and we found no significant difference between the two. The drugs were safe and well tolerated in the regimens used.
