Review[Effect of periodontal treatment on rheumatoid arthritis and vice versa].
The pathogenesis of periodontitis and of rheumatoid arthritis show remarkable similarities. There is a distinct degree of co-existence between the 2 diseases. ⋯ At present, a positive influence of periodontal treatment on the rheumatoid arthritis disease activity or of rheumatoid arthritis drug treatment on periodontitis is not sufficiently supported by clinical research. Periodontitis may play a role in unsatisfactory therapy response in some rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Case Reports[A man from Africa with a swelling in the head and neck region].
A general dental practitioner can, in the daily practice, be confronted with a patient with a swelling in the head and neck region. For such swellings an extensive differential diagnosis exists. ⋯ In addition to lymph node swellings resulting from a malignancy, diseases are now more frequently encountered which were previously uncommon in the Netherlands, due in part to the growing number of people with a non-Western ethnic background. Tuberculosis is such a rare disease, which can in the first instance express itself in the form of a lymph node swelling in the head and neck region.

Review[Bone substitutes, growth factors and distraction osteogenesis].
Up to the present time, bone transplants are commonly used to reconstruct bone defects. Recently, several bone substitutes have been suggested to overcome the disadvantages of the procedure of bone harvesting. However, research reveals that an autogenous bone graft is still the gold standard. ⋯ As an alternative distraction osteogenesis, a mechanical-based way of tissue engineering is suggested. In this procedure, tissue-generation takes place without the addition of external material. A combination of both tissue-substitution techniques, consisting of the addition of bone-replacement materials or growth factors during distraction osteogenesis, has also been evaluated in research on animals, although not with unequivocal results.
