Two cases of Swyer-James syndrome are reported. Case 1; A 25-year-old man was admitted to our hospital to be treated for Mycobacterium avium infection. Chest X-ray film revealed hyperlucency in the right lower lung. ⋯ Chest CT scan on inspiration and expiration detected air-trapping, which is characteristic of this syndrome. In both cases, the volume of the hyper lucent lung was normal. From these clinical findings, we diagnosed these two cases as Swyer-James syndrome and in this paper described the clinical features and treatment.

Cement, in particular Portland cement, is now widely used in the field of civil engineering and the construction industry. High alkalinity of wet cement and its tiny content of water-soluble chromate can cause occupational skin diseases. In this paper, we report four cases of contact dermatitis by cement and two cases of cement burn. ⋯ Therefore we concluded that better protective clothing and gloves should be used and that working conditions be improved. Most skin diseases caused by cement occur among workers at small-scale enterprises. Therefore it is desirable that regional occupational health centers, which were established to promote the health care system for workers at small-scale enterprises, take prompt measures to avoid the skin diseases.

We have accepted patients suffering out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) since September 1997. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the etiology of CPA and the outcome of the patients. We also investigated the effects of the pre-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by a bystander or emergency life-saving technicians (ELST) on the restoration of spontaneous circulation. ⋯ The CPR by ELST did not affect the resuscitated rate significantly. These results indicate that the most common etiology of CPA is unknown endogenous disease, and the rate of full recovery is very low (2.6%). This study suggests that bystander CPR may contribute to an improved outcome of the patients suffering out-of-hospital CPA.

In order to establish treatment of interstitial lung diseases in video assisted thoracoscopic lung biopsy, we retrospectively reviewed our experiences. The present study included 7 patients with a mean age of 46.4, range from 24 to 61, who were treated at our department from 1996 through 1999. They were 5 men and 2 women. ⋯ One patient had lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia. No complications occurred. The results indicate that video assisted thoracoscopic lung biopsy is an effective and safe way to diagnose interstitial lung diseases.

It is a well-known fact that women almost monopolize the field of fortune-telling in the present Japanese society--fortune-tellers and their customers (or clients) are mostly women. But once we view the relationship between women and fortune-telling in a general way, we can understand that fortune-telling is not necessarily monopolized by women. In other words, if we take for granted only the relationship between the two, we will overlook some sociological questions. ⋯ The feminization of fortune-telling is the process by which women's interests are channeled into fortune-telling and their monopolization of it. The purpose of this paper is to focus on this phenomenon--the feminization of fortune-telling'. By focusing on this phenomenon and analyzing its process, we can understand not only some aspects of the relationship between women and fortune-telling, but also bring up other questions regarding the image of Japanese women in the modern era.
