Recovery from concussion sustained in childhood and adolescence is poorly understood. We explored patterns of recovery for neurocognition and postconcussive symptoms following concussion in children and adolescents. ⋯ At 5 days postconcussion, the majority of children and adolescents experienced debilitating postconcussive symptoms. However, by 30 days postinjury, 90% demonstrated recovery to normal for both neurocognition and postconcussive symptoms.

Return to sport after open and microdiscectomy surgery versus conservative treatment for lumbar disc herniation: a systematic review with meta-analysis.
Lumbar disc herniation has a prevalence of up to 58% in the athletic population. Lumbar discectomy is a common surgical procedure to alleviate pain and disability in athletes. We systematically reviewed the current clinical evidence regarding athlete return to sport (RTS) following lumbar discectomy compared to conservative treatment. ⋯ Studies comparing surgical versus conservative treatment found no significant difference between groups regarding RTS. Not all athletes that RTS return at the level of participation they performed at prior to surgery. Owing to the heterogeneity and low methodological quality of included studies, rates of RTS cannot be accurately determined.

The European Resuscitation Council (ERC) 2015 Guidelines for Resuscitation were published recently. For the first time, these guidelines included a subsection on 'cardiac arrest during sports activities' in the section dealing with cardiac arrest in special circumstances, endorsing both the importance and unique nature of this form of cardiac arrest. This paper reviews four critical areas in the management of sudden cardiac arrest in a football player: recognition, response, resuscitation and removal from the field of play. Expeditious response with initiation of immediate resuscitation at the side of a collapsed player remains crucial for survival, and chest compressions should be continued until the automated external defibrillator (AED) has been fully activated, so that the sideline medical team response to the side of a non-contact collapsed player on the field of play, with AED and defibrillation, occurs within a maximum of 2 min from collapse.
