Doxazosin for treating lower urinary tract symptoms compatible with benign prostatic obstruction: a systematic review of efficacy and adverse effects.
To evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of doxazosin for treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) compatible with benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). ⋯ The evidence indicates that doxazosin is effective and generally well tolerated for improving LUTS and PUF in men with symptomatic BPO. Combined therapy was better than doxazosin alone in reducing the risk of clinical progression of BPO and other long-term complications related to BPO.

Transurethral microwave thermotherapy vs transurethral resection for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia: a systematic review.
To conduct a systematic review of randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT) compared with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in treating men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). ⋯ TUMT techniques are effective and safe short-term alternatives to TURP for treating BPH. However, TURP provided greater symptom and urinary flow improvements and fewer subsequent BPH treatments than TUMT.

Contemporary medicine is characterized by sophisticated specialization of the individual physician. The specialist in urological surgery may undertake one of the most important and primary medical tasks, the mitigation and therapy of pain. This review aims to provide an overview of the concepts of pain therapy in urology. ⋯ Neuropathic pain is probably the most difficult to manage and requires consultation with a pain-management specialist. In the case of neuropathic pain, treatment only with opioids is of limited efficacy and combination with co-analgesics is necessary. In addition, invasive analgesic therapies should sometimes be considered.
