Randomized Controlled Trial[Selective primary obesity prevention in children].
Obesity in children is characterized by a rapid gain of weight starting at an age of 4 to 5 years. We investigated whether low threshold prevention prevented a further increase of the Standard-Deviation-Score of the BMI (BMI SDS) in children with impending obesity. ⋯ A low threshold intervention in early childhood could successfully prevent an increase of obesity.

Randomized Controlled Trial["Laryngeal Tube-D" (LT-D) and "Laryngeal Mask" (LMA)].
In 2005 the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) published a revised version of the guidelines for Advanced Life Support (ALS). One of the aims was to reduce the time without chest compression in the first period of cardiac arrest. We evaluated in a manikin study whether using the single use laryngeal tube (LT-D) instead of single use laryngeal mask (LMA) for emergency airway management could reduce the "No Flow Time" (NFT). The NFT is defined as the time during which no chest compressions take place. ⋯ In this manikin study data showed that the LT-D may be a good alternative airway device compared to LMA for providing and maintaining a patent airway during resuscitation.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial[Acetyl starch as volume substitute, a possible alternative to HES].
Pharmacokinetics and tolerability of acetyl starch (ACS) in comparison to hydroxyethyl starch (HES) were investigated after repeated intravenous infusions. METHODS AND COHORTS: A 500 ml solution of ACS (n = 8) or HES (n = 9) was infused to male volunteers (Age 25-42 Years) over four hours on five consecutive days. ⋯ According to these data ACS is an alternative to HES for volume replacement. Well-known side effects due to long storage of HES in tissues may not occur following application of ACS. However, the wide usage of ACS is restricted by the limited stability of ACS solutions at room temperature. ACS solutions are thus only stable during storage at lower temperatures.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial[Terminating supraventricular tachycardia with adenosine--comparing the effectiveness of 12 mg and 18 mg].
This study was done to answer the question if intravenous application of 18 mg adenosine is superior to 12 mg adenosine for the termination of supraventricular tachycardias. ⋯ In AV nodal reentrant tachycardias and AV reentrant tachycardias with an accessory pathway, which can not be terminated by the administration of adenosine in a dose of 12 mg, the tachycardia can be terminated more effectively by the application of 18 mg adenosine.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial[A therapeutic comparison between hemodilution and pentoxifylline in arterial obstructive disease. An objective assessment by quantitative Doppler sonography].
The effects of a five-week course of haemodilution or pentoxifylline were compared in two matched groups of 10 patients each (18 men, 2 women; mean age 63 [47-77] years) with peripheral vascular disease of the legs, using clinical findings and Doppler ultrasound measurements as the criteria. Ten patients (group I) had six venesections of 400 ml each followed by the injection of 500 ml low-molecular dextran (10%), while the other ten (group II) received 400 mg pentoxifylline four times daily by mouth after initial intravenous loading. ⋯ Only in group I was there a significant prestenotic maximal and effective increase in blood flow velocity (by 66%: P less than 0.001 and 68%: P less than 0.05, respectively), while the poststenotic effective velocity also increased significantly by 66% (P less than 0.01). There was no significant change in group II patients.
