Childhood obesity is a widespread and growing problem in the world. Body mass index (BMI) and weight-for-height criterion have been used to determine childhood obesity. No data was available to evaluate cardiovascular risk factors in overweight and obese Chinese children screened by weight-for-height index and Chinese newly developed BMI criterion. ⋯ Our study reveals that overweight and/or obesity screened by both Chinese new BMI and weight-for-height criterion are associated with increased levels of cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., elevated serum TG, LDL, apo B, and reduced HDL-C, apo A levels). Using Chinese BMI criterion may underestimate the prevalence of childhood obesity but it could be adopted as a unique tool for screening children's overweight in population-based screening programs.

Selenium and cancer: biomarkers of selenium status and molecular action of selenium supplements.
The relationship between selenium and cancer involves many different aspects. These include the forms of selenium present in the diet and in the body, their functions and mechanisms of action, and methods employed in assessing an individual's selenium nutritional status-both in general, and in epidemiological studies of the risk of cancer in relation to diet, as well as in connection with long-term trials for investigating the disease-preventive potential of selenium supplementation. ⋯ The rapid advance in the knowledge of different selenoproteins and their biological functions has opened up new possibilities for the understanding of the biological effects of selenium supplementation. A wide variety of effects of different forms and doses of selenium has been observed in a number of experimental systems, and it is at present difficult to pinpoint the mechanism that may explain the positive preventive effects of selenium supplementation observed in some human long-term trials. Moreover, additional such trials are needed to define the benefits and risks of different types and doses of selenium supplements which in the future may be implemented for public health reasons. Another necessary focus for future research is a better understanding of the mechanisms by which selenium interferes with the carcinogenesis process.

The n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been found to process neuroprotective effects. However, the exact cellular mechanisms are not well understood. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is one of neurotrophins, which is involved in neuron differentiation, survival, and synaptogenesis. ⋯ Our results indicate that EPA exerts beneficial effects on cell survival through modulating neurotrophin receptor expression.

Trends in food availability in Portugal in 1966-2003: comparison with other Mediterranean countries.
Dietary intake has changed considerably in South European countries, but whether those changes were similar between countries is currently unknown. ⋯ Portugal is gradually moving away from the traditional Mediterranean diet to a more Westernized diet as well as France, Greece, Italy and Spain. Noticeably, the trends of diet transition were observed relatively faster in Portugal than in the other four Mediterranean countries.

This study examined the status of oxidative stress and B vitamins in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients in different tumor-node-metastasis stages. Patients were divided into two groups as I + II (n = 21) and III + IV (n = 19). ⋯ This study provided novel clinical findings regarding the status of oxidative stress and B vitamins in HCC patients. Plasma glutathione level may be a proper biomarker for evaluating oxidative status for HCC patients. Our data indicate that HCC patients might need B vitamins supplementation. The increased serum level of triglyceride and cholesterol might be a consequence of an impaired hepatic fat metabolism, and might be improved by a lower fat administration to these patients.
