Review Meta AnalysisSingle-incision appendectomy is comparable to conventional laparoscopic appendectomy: a systematic review and pooled analysis.
Acute appendicitis remains the common gastrointestinal emergency in adults. Single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy (SILA) has been proposed as the next evolution in minimally invasive surgery. SILA is postulated to reduce postoperative pain and enhance cosmesis, while effectively removing an inflamed appendix. However, the efficacy and benefits of SILA compared with conventional laparoscopic appendectomy (CLA) remain to be determined. Our objectives were to systematically review the literature comparing SILA with CLA for acute appendicitis and perform a pooled analysis on the efficacy of SILA. ⋯ This systematic review and pooled analysis demonstrates that SILA is comparable to CLA for acute appendicitis in adults. However, this review identifies the need for randomized controlled trials to clarify the efficacy of SILA compared with CLA.

Review Case ReportsLaparoscopic management of obturator nerve schwannomas: experiences with 6 cases and review of the literature.
To present our experiences in management of obturator nerve schwannomas by laparoscopy. ⋯ Pelvic schwannomas are rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. The intraoperative observation of the nerve running through the tumor may aid the diagnosis. Although obturator nerve injury does not seem to be associated with severe impairments, efforts should be made to preserve the integrity of the nerve. Laparoscopic surgery is a safe and feasible method for approaching benign schwannoma in the obturator fossa.

ReviewUse of fibrin-based sealants and gelatin-matrix hemostats in laparoscopic liver surgery.
During surgery, liver tissue is particularly prone to bleeding which can be difficult to control, especially in patients with liver disease-associated coagulopathy. Topical sealants and hemostats can enhance clot formation and wound healing, and can be useful for controlling or preventing troublesome bleeding during surgical interventions where conventional methods of hemostasis are inadequate. ⋯ On the basis of current evidence of using hemostats and sealants in open liver surgery, there is potential of developing these strategies in laparoscopic liver surgery.

Review Meta AnalysisLaparoscopy or not: a meta-analysis of the surgical effects of laparoscopic versus open appendicectomy.
Both open appendicectomy and laparoscopic appendicectomy have their own advantages and disadvantages. The purpose of our meta-analysis is to compare the surgical effects of laparoscopic versus open appendicectomy. In our study, Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched. ⋯ Time of hospital stay (WMD -0.82; 95% CI: -0.93 to -0.70 d), time to return to normal activities (WMD -6.85; 95% CI: -7.62 to -6.09 d), and diet (WMD -0.61; 95% CI: -0.86 to -0.36 d) were significantly decreased in the laparoscopic appendicectomy group (all P<0.00001). There is no convincing difference in complications (odds ratio 0.99; 95% CI: 0.80-1.22; P=0.92) and death rates (odds ratio 0.97; 95% CI: 0.29-3.25; P=0.96). In conclusion, laparoscopic appendicectomy may have advantages over open appendicectomy in hospital stay and postoperative recovery.

Review Case ReportsLaparoscopic examination and resection for giant lipoma of the omentum: a case report and review of related literature.
We report herein the case of a giant lipoma of the greater omentum that was treated by laparoscopic surgery. A 71-year-old male patient was admitted with a diagnosis of sigmoid colon cancer. During preoperative examination, a gallbladder stone and an intra-abdominal giant lipoma were accidentally diagnosed. ⋯ We then performed a sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer through the same laparotomy. The resected tumor measured 29 x 19 x 3 cm and weighed 1250 g, and a histopathologic examination revealed a benign lipoma. Laparoscopic examination and resection of a giant lipoma of the omentum are particularly useful.
