Randomized Controlled TrialMalnutrition in community-dwelling adults with dementia (NutriAlz Trial).
The objective of this study is to assess the nutritional status, measured by the MNA, in community-dwelling elderly individuals with dementia and to identify clinical risk factors for nutritional risk or malnutrition. ⋯ These results will allow a better understanding of the clinical stage previous to malnutrition. An adequate diagnosis and treatment of identified modifiable factors like functional impairment, eating behaviours and depression could delay or avoid malnutrition.

Randomized Controlled TrialA randomized controlled Alzheimer's disease prevention trial's evolution into an exposure trial: the PREADViSE Trial.
To summarize the ongoing prevention of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by vitamin E and selenium (PREADViSE) trial as an ancillary study to SELECT (a large prostate cancer prevention trial) and to present the blinded results of the first year as an exposure study. ⋯ Partnering with SELECT led to an AD prevention trial conducted at a very reasonable cost by taking advantage of the experience and efficient clinical trial management found in a cancer cooperative group (Southwest Oncology Group or SWOG). Once unblinded, the RCT and exposure study data have the potential to yield new information on long term exposure to antioxidant supplements under controlled conditions.

Randomized Controlled TrialMalnutrition screening and early nutrition intervention in hospitalised patients in acute aged care: a randomised controlled trial.
High rates of malnutrition have been reported in the older hospitalized patient population. This is recognised to impact on patient outcomes and health costs. This study aimed to assess the impact of nutrition screening and intervention on these parameters. ⋯ Malnutrition in the older hospital population is common. Malnutrition screening on hospital admission facilitated targeted nutrition intervention, however length of stay and re-presentations were only reduced in older malnourished patients with an MNA score less than 17.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyRandomised active programs on healthcare workers' flu vaccination in geriatric health care settings in France: the VESTA study.
Because of a lack of efficacy of influenza vaccination in elderly population, there are still numerous outbreaks in geriatric health care settings. The health care workers (HCW) flu vaccination is known to get herd immunity and decrease the impact of influenza in elderly population living in geriatric health care settings. However, the rates of vaccinated HCWs are still low in France. The French Geriatric Infection Risk Institute (ORIG) performed the VESTA study, a three-phase multicentre to identify factors limiting vaccination in HCWs, and to develop and implement active programs promoting HCWs influenza vaccination. ⋯ In geriatric health care centres in France, an active multicenter program giving personal satisfaction and taking into account the profile of non-vaccinated HCWs was more effective in promoting flu vaccination than a scientifically factual information program. HCW involvement is required in program implementation in order to avoid rejection of top-down information.

Randomized Controlled TrialImproved nutrient intake in older obese adults undergoing a structured diet and exercise intentional weight loss program.
Physicians are often reluctant to advise older obese patients to lose weight for fear of compromised nutrition and excessive loss of muscle mass and strength, all of which may lead to a loss of independence and accelerate disability. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine nutrient intake in older obese adults undergoing a weight loss intervention. ⋯ A nutrition intervention to promote weight loss in older obese adults was achieved using PMR as a primary strategy. Diet quality was improved for WL vs. WS in using the nutrient fortified product, even with a reduction in total energy intake.
