Pain relief and tolerability balance of immediate release tapentadol or oxycodone treatment for patients with moderate to severe osteoarthritis or low back pain.
Opioid treatment effectiveness may be best compared using definitions of treatment response, which combine measures assessing pain reduction and the occurrence of adverse events (AEs). This analysis of data from two phase III clinical trials was conducted to examine the pain relief and tolerability (PRT) balance of immediate release (IR) tapentadol and oxycodone in patients with moderate to severe osteoarthritis (OA) or low back pain. ⋯ Pain reduction and tolerability are both important attributes of an effective analgesic treatment. Based on data from two trials, tapentadol IR produced an improved PRT balance compared with oxycodone IR.

The effect of a translating research into practice (TRIP)--cancer intervention on cancer pain management in older adults in hospice.
Pain is a major concern for individuals with cancer, particularly older adults who make up the largest segment of individuals with cancer and who have some of the most unique pain challenges. One of the priorities of hospice is to provide a pain-free death, and while outcomes are better in hospice, patients still die with poorly controlled pain. ⋯ Findings indicate a number of factors that may impact implementation of multicomponent interventions, including unique characteristics and culture of the setting, the level of involvement with the change processes, competing priorities and confounding factors, and complexity of the innovation (practice change). Our results suggest that future study is needed on specific factors to target when implementing a community-based hospice intervention, including determining and measuring intervention fidelity prospectively.

Pain in postsurgical orthopedic rehabilitation: a multicenter study.
The aim of this study was to quantify and characterize pain in patients undergoing lower limb postsurgical orthopedic rehabilitation and to investigate the impact of pain in slowing or interrupting their rehabilitation. ⋯ In light of the high occurrence and intensity of pain in the sample, and of the significant impact on the rehabilitation program, clinicians should pay more attention to pain, especially neuropathic pain, in postsurgical patients. Tailored pain pharmacological therapy could possibly improve patient compliance during the rehabilitation process and enhance long-term outcomes.

Efficacy of acupuncture for acute migraine attack: a multicenter single blinded, randomized controlled trial.
We aim to investigate the efficacy of acupuncture for acute migraine attacks comparing with sham acupuncture. ⋯ This trial suggested that verum acupuncture group was superior to sham acupuncture group on relieving pain and reducing the usage of acute medication.

Occipital nerve pulsed radiofrequency treatment: a multi-center study evaluating predictors of outcome.
Occipital neuralgia (ON) is a challenging condition for which there is no reference standard for treatment. The purpose of this study was to provide outcome data on the largest study to date evaluating pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) for ON and to determine whether any demographic, clinical, or treatment characteristics are associated with success. ⋯ PRF may provide intermediate-term benefit in ON to a significant proportion of refractory cases. Careful attention to selection criteria and treatment parameters may further improve treatment outcomes.
