To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound-guided single-shot quadratus lumborum block (QLB) for postoperative analgesia in adults following total hip arthroplasty (THA). ⋯ QLB as part of multimodal analgesia did not result in any significant analgesic benefits in patients undergoing hip arthroplasty in terms of either postoperative opioid consumption or pain scores at rest and on movement. Overall, the level of certainty is low. Further, well-designed trials are required to verify the results.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and fibromyalgia (FM) are two debilitating, moderately comorbid illnesses in which chronic musculoskeletal pain symptoms are prevalent. These individuals can experience post-exertional malaise (PEM), a phenomenon in which symptom severity is worsened for 24 hours or longer after physical stress, but the pain-related component of PEM is not well characterized. ⋯ People with ME/CFS and FM experience small to moderate increases in pain severity after exercise, which confirms pain as a component of PEM and emphasizes its debilitating impact in ME/CFS and FM. Future directions include determining mechanisms of pain-related PEM and developing exercise prescriptions that minimize symptom exacerbation in these illnesses.

Recent studies have suggested that neuropathic pain exhibits a daily diurnal pattern, with peak levels usually occurring in the late afternoon to evening and the trough in the morning hours, although literature on this topic has been sparse. This scoping review examines current evidence on the chronobiology of neuropathic pain both in animal models and in humans with neuropathic pain. ⋯ Studies included in this review demonstrated a diurnal variation in the pattern of neuropathic pain that is distinct from the pattern for nociceptive pain. These findings have implications for potential therapeutic strategies for neuropathic pain.

Whether parental presence during their children's painful medical procedures is advantageous with regard to children's pain-related outcomes is questionable. Research on this topic is equivocal, and additional questions, such as whether levels of parental involvement may play a role as well, remain to be addressed. The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize and critically appraise the literature on the impact of parental presence vs absence during their children's painful medical procedures on the child's pain-related outcomes. ⋯ To provide clear recommendations on how to involve the parent during the procedure, as well as for which type of children and parents parental presence has the best effects, further research is needed, as indicated in this review.
