Craniofacial pain and disability inventory (CF-PDI): development and psychometric validation of a new questionnaire.
Orofacial pain, headaches, and neck pain are very common pain conditions in the general population and might be associated in their pathophysiology, although this is not yet clarified. The development and validation of a prediction inventory is important to minimize risks. Most recent questionnaires have not focused on pain, but pain is the common symptom in temporomandibular disorders, headaches, and neck pain. It is necessary to provide tools for these conditions. ⋯ The CF-PDI showed good psychometric properties. Based on the findings of this study, the CF-PDI can be used in research and clinical practice for the assessment of patients with craniofacial pain.

Long-term consequences of acute pain for patients under methadone or buprenorphine maintenance treatment.
Acute and chronic pains are reported to be highly prevalent in patients under opioid maintenance treatment (OMT). Lack of knowledge concerning the complex relationship between pain, opioid use, and their impact on OMT efficacy can account for the barriers encountered for pain management. ⋯ This study demonstrates the strong negative impact of acute pain on OMT in a population mainly composed of patients under buprenorphine, as well as differential response depending on the OMT medication. The findings highlight the need to consider the characteristics of pain in the population under OMT and to develop evidence-based guidelines for pain management.

Randomized clinical trial evaluating transdermal Ibuprofen for moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is a common condition, typically treated with orally administered analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Chronic administration of NSAIDs, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs, i.e., duloxetine), and opioid medications (i.e., tramadol) is regularly associated with multiple, serious side effects, in part due to the route of administration. Transdermal delivery of NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, represents a potentially alternative treatment for this inflammatory pain condition with a better therapeutic profile. ⋯ NCT01496326.

Pain prevalence at various stages of cancer ranges from 27% to 60% for outpatients. Yet, how pain is managed in this patient group is poorly understood. ⋯ Pain remains a significant problem in medical oncology outpatients, and often pain is insufficiently managed. Patients with a high pain intensity were more at risk to experience pain related interference with daily activities, but even some patients suffering mild pain experienced this. As adequate pain relief for up to 86% of the patients with cancer should be feasible, pain in medical oncology outpatients is still undertreated. Taking into account the interference of pain with daily activities and predictors of pain will facilitate cancer pain management. The study has been approved by the Medical Ethics Committee (CMO) in all 7 hospitals (METC protocol number 2011/020) and has been registered by the Dutch Trial register (NTR): NTR2739.
