Post-operative analgesic effects of butorphanol or firocoxib administered to dogs undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy.
To compare the post-operative analgesic effects of butorphanol or firocoxib in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy. ⋯ Firocoxib produced better post-operative analgesia than butorphanol. Firocoxib may be used as part of a multimodal analgesia protocol but may not be effective as a sole analgesic.

The effect of midazolam on the end-tidal concentration of isoflurane necessary to prevent movement in dogs.
To determine the possible additive effect of midazolam, a GABA(A) agonist, on the end-tidal concentration of isoflurane that prevents movement (MAC(NM) ) in response to noxious stimulation. ⋯ Midazolam doses in the range of 10-80 μg kg(-1) minute(-1) significantly reduced the isoflurane MAC(NM) . However, doses greater than 10 μg kg(-1) minute(-1) did not further decrease MAC(NM) indicating a ceiling effect.

Effects of propofol on isoflurane minimum alveolar concentration and cardiovascular function in mechanically ventilated goats.
To evaluate the effects of propofol, on isoflurane minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) and cardiovascular function in mechanically ventilated goats. ⋯ In goats, propofol reduces isoflurane MAC in a dose-dependent manner with minimal cardiovascular effects.

Effect of intravenous propofol and remifentanil on heart rate, blood pressure and nociceptive response in acepromazine premedicated dogs.
To investigate the cardiorespiratory, nociceptive and endocrine effects of the combination of propofol and remifentanil, in dogs sedated with acepromazine. ⋯ Infusion of 0.25-0.5 μg kg(-1) minute(-1) remifentanil combined with 0.2 mg kg(-1) minute(-1) propofol produced little effect on arterial blood pressure and led to a good recovery. The analgesia produced was sufficient to control the nociceptive response applied by electrical stimulation, suggesting that it may be appropriate for performing surgery.

Two doses of dexmedetomidine in combination with buprenorphine for premedication in dogs; a comparison with acepromazine and buprenorphine.
To assess as premedicants, the sedative, cardiorespiratory and propofol-sparing effects in dogs of dexmedetomidine and buprenorphine compared to acepromazine and buprenorphine. ⋯ When administered with buprenorphine, at these doses, dexmedetomidine had no advantages in terms of sedation and induction quality over acepromazine. Both doses of dexmedetomidine produced characteristic cardiovascular and respiratory effects of a similar magnitude.
