Trends in All-terrain Vehicle Injuries From 2000 to 2015 and the Effect of Targeted Public Safety Campaigns.
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) represent a notable portion of orthopaedic injuries presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in the United States. Public awareness campaigns have targeted these injuries, and this study sought to examine the effect of the 2007 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons public safety campaign on ATV use. ⋯ This study provides the most current data on ATV injuries presenting to EDs in the United States. The rate of ATV-related injuries has steadily decreased since 2007, which corresponds to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons public awareness campaign. However, the reasons for this decrease are likely multifactorial. Children aged 14 to 17 years are at high risk of ATV-related injuries, with orthopaedic injuries accounting for a notable proportion.

Intrawound antibiotics have been used in orthopaedic surgery procedures to prevent the development of surgical site infections. Local delivery of antibiotic powder has demonstrated a notable reduction in surgical site infection in rabbit and rodent in vivo models, as well as in other surgical fields, including vascular, colorectal, cardiothoracic, and dermatologic surgery. ⋯ Although the theory behind the use of intrawound antibiotic powder is promising, it has potential adverse effects, including antibiotic resistance, circulatory collapse, and decreased bone healing. In addition, most studies in the orthopaedic literature on the use of intrawound antibiotic powder are retrospective in nature.

Case ReportsConcomitant Proximal and Distal Tibiofibular Joint Dislocation Associated With a Tibial Shaft Fracture.
An association exists between tibial shaft fractures and ankle injuries. In addition, although uncommon, an association between tibial shaft fractures and proximal tibiofibular dislocations has also been established. ⋯ Here, we discuss a case of a complete proximal and distal tibiofibular syndesmotic complex dislocation associated with a tibial shaft fracture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of this injury pattern associated with a tibial shaft fracture.

The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Application Process: An Analysis of the Applicant Experience.
Orthopaedic surgery residency positions are highly sought after. The purpose of this survey study was to report the following components of the applicant experience: (1) the number of programs to which applicants applied and interviewed, (2) the performance criteria associated with receiving interviews, (3) the way applicants respond to e-mail interview offers, (4) the pre- and post-interview communication between applicants and programs, (5) the importance of interview day activities and the determinants of the applicant rank order list (ROL), and (6) the financial cost of the application process. ⋯ Applying to orthopaedic surgery residency is a complex, competitive, and costly experience for applicants. The application process may benefit from better expectation management of applicant candidacy and a more prohibitive communication policy between applicants and programs after the interview day.

ReviewManaging Sports-related Concussions From Time of Injury Through Return to Play.
Sports-related concussions continue to generate widespread interest. A concussion is a complex pathophysiologic process, with or without loss of consciousness, that results in a disturbance of brain function. Risk factors include age <18 years, female sex, and history of a previous concussion. ⋯ For prolonged concussion, physical rehabilitation or medications for headaches, mood, or sleep disturbance may be required. Education, rule changes, and equipment improvements may assist in prevention. The long-term consequences of concussions are not fully understood and merit additional research.
