Cluster headache (CH) is a neurovascular headache syndrome characterized by headache attacks that occur with a circadian and circannual periodicity. The calculated prevalence of CH in reproductive-aged women is 7.5 of 100,000 women. ⋯ Thus, treatment of CH in pregnant and lactating women may remain a significant therapeutic challenge. This manuscript briefly reviews the epidemiology of CH in women, and then focuses on treatment options for both acute and preventative management of CH in pregnant and lactating women.

Complementary medicine in cancer care: adding a therapy dog to the team.
Animal-assisted therapy, including visits from certified therapy dogs, offer a valuable and often underutilized resource for addressing unmet needs in cancer patients. Prospective research studies have documented symptomatic benefits for reducing pain, psychological distress, and fatigue in a variety of patient populations, including cancer patients. Utilizing consistent policies minimizes patient risk and infection control concerns associated with animal visits.

Patients with osteoarthritis (OA) primarily seek treatment due to pain and disability, yet the primary endpoints for rodent OA models tend to be histological measures of joint destruction. The discrepancy between clinical and preclinical evaluations is problematic, given that radiographic evidence of OA in humans does not always correlate to the severity of patient-reported symptoms. ⋯ While obvious differences exist between quadrupedal and bipedal gait sequences, the gait abnormalities seen in humans and in rodent OA models reflect similar compensatory behaviors that protect an injured limb from loading. The purpose of this review is to describe these compensations and current methods used to assess rodent gait characteristics, while detailing important considerations for the selection of gait analysis methods in rodent OA models.

Most neuropathic analgesic medications have been introduced initially for other medical conditions. Anticonvulsants, local anesthetics, and antidepressants later were found to be effective in the treatment of neuropathic pain. Carbamazepine and the newer anticonvulsants such as gabapentin, lamotrigine, topiramate, and oxcarbazepine are being used as first-line or adjunctive therapy. ⋯ All of the available analgesics have considerable side effects, which necessitate careful titration. Future drug research may focus on developing medications specifically for neuropathic pain. These designer agents may have more desirable action without the unwanted side effects.
