Effect of temperature and storage media on human periodontal ligament fibroblast viability.
Many solutions have been examined as possible storage media for avulsed teeth. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of several storage media to preserve cultured periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLF) under different temperatures. The media tested were: sterile Hank's balanced salt solution (sHBSS), non-sterile HBSS (nHBSS), skimmed milk, Save-A-Tooth((R)), Minimum Essential Medium (MEM) and water (negative control). ⋯ The Save-A-Tooth((R)) had a detrimental effect on cells after 24 h. The influence of temperature on the effectiveness of the storage media tested showed at 20 degrees C a decreasing order of efficacy as follows: milk > sHBSS and nHBSS > MEM > Save-A-Tooth((R)) > water while at 37 degrees C it was: MEM > nHBSS > milk > sHBSS > Save-A-Tooth((R)) > water. In conclusion, incubation temperature altered the effectiveness of the storage media and skimmed milk at 20 degrees C was better than HBSS in maintaining PDLF viability.

Panfacial fractures present a unique set of problems to the anaesthesiologist and surgeon. Airway management in panfacial fractures is still a challenge to the anaesthesiologist as all modalities available such as orotracheal intubation, nasotracheal intubation, tracheostomy, etc., have their own advantages and disadvantages. When all the conventional modalities to secure airway seem unsuitable then submental route offers an excellent alternative to manage airway in such patients. Here we describe our experience with submental intubation technique in 10 patients with panfacial injuries over a period of two years.

The objective of this study was to investigate the level of knowledge and attitudes regarding first aid for dental trauma in children (TDI) by non-dental professionals and paramedical technicians of hospital emergency rooms in the South Araucanía Health Service, Chile, which was attained through application of a survey. ⋯ The majority of the respondents were not knowledgeable regarding TDI or the management and benefits of timely care, particularly in cases of avulsed permanent teeth. Therefore, formal education and training on the topic is suggested during undergraduate studies.

It is accepted that sports mouthguards decrease the incidence of dental injuries in athletes, but the value of oral orthotics in the prevention of concussion/mild traumatic brain injuries in footballers remains contentious. However, previous investigations have primarily studied non-customized mouthguards without dental/temporo-mandibular joint examinations of the subjects. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine whether the use of a customized mandibular orthotic after temporo-mandibular joint assessment reduces the incidence of concussion/mild traumatic brain injuries in high-school football players. ⋯ The preliminary results of this study suggest that a customized mandibular orthotic may decrease the incidence of concussion/mild traumatic brain injuries in high- school football athletes, but a comprehensive study is required to confirm these initial findings. Furthermore, additional research is necessary to indicate the possible mode(s) of action of a customized mandibular orthotic in the prevention of concussion/mild traumatic brain injuries.

In avulsion, teeth are bodily displaced out of the bony socket. Boys, aged 7-9 years, are most prone to avulsion of maxillary central incisors. Tooth avulsion should ideally be treated with immediate replantation. ⋯ Among all other groups (non-dentists) immediate replantation was suggested by 4.6% and transport to a dentist by 3.3%. Non-dentists in Pakistan, including doctors, have insufficient knowledge about the immediate treatment of tooth avulsion. Dentists, in comparison, have significantly more knowledge, but may need training in selection of the appropriate treatment option and handling and care of the avulsed tooth.
