Variation in approaches to acute ANCA-associated vasculitis in Australia and New Zealand: rituximab, plasma exchange and glucocorticoids.
Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a rare autoimmune disease which is managed by a range of specialities. There are limited data on treatment practices in Australia and New Zealand. ⋯ There is substantial variation in approaches to the acute management of AAV in Australia and New Zealand, including differences in resource availability. This variation in care demonstrates the need to implement current practice guidelines and institute contemporary monitoring of AAV management, to achieve best patient outcomes.

Prior hospital attendances in deceased Australian patients with alcohol-related liver disease: a multicentre project.
To establish the hospital visit history of patients who die with alcohol-related liver disease (ArLD). To determine if patients with ArLD present to hospital early or in the terminal phase of their disease. ⋯ Most patients with ArLD have multiple early attendances, which present an opportunity for early interventions. There are missed opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients for outpatient hospital engagement.

Development of a list of Australian potentially inappropriate medicines using the Delphi technique.
Older people are at high risk of medicines-related harms. otentially inappropriate medicines (PIMs) list has been developed to assist clinicians and researchers to identify medicines with risks that may potentially outweigh their benefits in order to improve medication management and safety. ⋯ An explicit PIMs list for older people living in Australia has been developed containing 19 drugs/drug classes. The PIMs list is intended to be used as a guide for clinicians when assessing medication appropriateness in older people in Australian clinical settings and does not substitute individualised treatment advice from clinicians.

Review Meta AnalysisEfficacy and safety of prophylactic anticoagulation in patients with primary nephrotic syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is associated with an increased incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE), approximately 10%. We performed a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy and safety of prophylactic anticoagulation in patients with NS. ⋯ Our findings suggest that prophylactic anticoagulation in adult patients with primary NS may reduce the risk of VTE, even if it may be associated with a not negligible bleeding risk.

Learning outcomes from a systematic review workshop series for junior doctors.
Systematic reviews provide the highest level of evidence about a topic. Ten-week workshops in conducting systematic reviews were held with hospital doctors in 2019 and 2020. ⋯ The skills learnt from the systematic review workshop series impacted not only participants' research knowledge and skills, and plans to conduct future research, but also facilitated looking up medical literature in daily clinical work, supporting evidence-based clinical practice.
