Contemporary trends in stroke complicating cardiac catheterisation.
Stroke remains an important complication of diagnostic cardiac catheterisation and percutaneous coronary intervention and is associated with high rates of in-hospital mortality. ⋯ The incidence and functional severity of stroke remains low despite evolving procedural practice with a stable incidence over time despite changes in procedural practice; however, post-procedural stroke confirms an increased mortality hazard.

Observational StudyShort-term colectomy is avoided in over half of regional patients failing medical therapy for acute severe ulcerative colitis with co-ordinated transfer and tertiary care.
Many patients presenting with an acute severe ulcerative colitis to a regional hospital are transferred to a metropolitan hospital for specialised care. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes and characteristics of these patients. ⋯ Over 50% of the patients failing therapy in a regional centre and requiring transfer avoided short term colectomy with co-ordinated referral for rescue therapy in a tertiary metropolitan inflammatory bowel disease unit. These patients would have ultimately required colectomy in their regional hospital without intervention.

Randomized Controlled TrialModel-based analysis on systemic availability of co-administered cannabinoids after controlled vaporised administration.
The most important two medicinal cannabinoids are Δ9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Vaporised administration is superior due to its higher systemic availability, lower individual variability and faster drug delivery. Although it is common THC is co-administered with CBD, the influence of CBD on the pharmacokinetics, especially the systemic availability of THC after vaporised administration, is unknown. ⋯ The results observed in this study are useful for guiding future pharmacokinetic studies of medicinal cannabinoids, and for development of dosing guidelines for medical use of cannabis in the 'real-world' setting.

Patients with multiple myeloma over a large catchment of 2.5 million square kilometres: a Western Australia retrospective survival review.
Multiple myeloma is an incurable malignancy of plasma cells. We retrospectively reviewed the survival outcomes of patients with multiple myeloma in Western Australia (WA) public hospitals over a 10-year period. We did not detect a difference in survival between patients residing the metropolitan Perth and regional areas, despite a paucity of haematology services in regional WA due to low population density in a large geographic area. Patients with R-ISS Stage 3 had the poorest survival in our cohort with median survival of 24 months.

Comparison of the effects of oral iron treatment every day and every other day in female patients with iron deficiency anaemia.
It is known that daily divided doses and high doses of iron increase hepcidin and reduce iron absorption. ⋯ A low-dosage of iron treatment every other day may be used in the place of providing iron once or twice every day with similar effectiveness and lower rates of GIS side effects.
