Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Ceftaroline fosamil versus ceftriaxone for the treatment of Asian patients with community-acquired pneumonia: a randomised, controlled, double-blind, phase 3, non-inferiority with nested superiority trial.
Ceftriaxone with or without a macrolide antibiotic is a recommended treatment for patients with community-acquired pneumonia requiring hospital admission and intravenous antibiotic treatment. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of ceftaroline fosamil compared with ceftriaxone in the treatment of Asian patients admitted to hospital with community-acquired pneumonia. ⋯ AstraZeneca.

Simeprevir versus telaprevir with peginterferon and ribavirin in previous null or partial responders with chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1 infection (ATTAIN): a randomised, double-blind, non-inferiority phase 3 trial.
We did a phase 3 study in previous non-responders with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection and compensated liver disease that related to the standard of care for these patients at the time this study was initiated. We investigated whether simeprevir is non-inferior in terms of efficacy to telaprevir, each in combination with peginterferon alfa-2a and ribavirin. ⋯ Janssen.

Severe infections kill more than 4·5 million children every year. Population-based data for severe infections in children requiring admission to intensive care units (ICUs) are scarce. We assessed changes in incidence and mortality of severe infections in critically ill children in Australia and New Zealand. ⋯ National Medical Health and Research Council, Australian Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium, Centre of Research Excellence (1029983).

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Tedizolid for 6 days versus linezolid for 10 days for acute bacterial skin and skin-structure infections (ESTABLISH-2): a randomised, double-blind, phase 3, non-inferiority trial.
New antibiotics are needed to treat infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria. Tedizolid is a novel oxazolidinone antibacterial drug designed to provide enhanced activity against Gram-positive pathogens. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of intravenous to oral tedizolid for treatment of patients with acute bacterial skin and skin-structure infections. ⋯ Cubist Pharmaceuticals.

Multicenter Study
Development and assessment of molecular diagnostic tests for 15 enteropathogens causing childhood diarrhoea: a multicentre study.
Childhood diarrhoea can be caused by many pathogens that are difficult to assay in the laboratory. Molecular diagnostic techniques provide a uniform method to detect and quantify candidate enteropathogens. We aimed to develop and assess molecular tests for identification of enteropathogens and their association with disease. ⋯ Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Next Generation Molecular Diagnostics Project.
