The objective of this study was to develop a child-friendly biofeedback-mediated relaxation device called BrightHearts. ⋯ The BrightHearts app can be used to teach children biofeedback-assisted relaxation. Ongoing studies are evaluating its efficacy for the management of procedural pain in children.

Nonresponsiveness and Susceptibility of Opioid Side Effects Related to Cancer Patients' Clinical Characteristics: A Post-Hoc Analysis.
The response to opioids is not always positive in cancer patients. A considerable proportion of patients do not respond (nonresponders [NRs]) or experience severe toxicity. The aim of this analysis was to assess the role of demographic characteristics, pain features, comorbidities, and ongoing therapy on the lack of efficacy and on the occurrence of severe adverse drug reactions (ADRs). ⋯ Several clinical variables are correlated with opioid response in cancer patients. In particular, the presence of BTP is associated with nonresponse. Additionally, patients who receive polypharmacological therapy are more likely to experience opioid adverse events.

Opioid usage is reportedly increased in patients with advanced cancer and low total cholesterol (TC). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of preoperative serum TC levels on postoperative opioid usage in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery. ⋯ Preoperative serum TC levels have no effect on pain outcomes in the 3 days following laparoscopic gastric surgery.

The management of neuropathic pain and pain related to bone vaso-occlusive crises in sickle cell disease remains challenging in children. Lidocaine 5% patches are recommended in adults for neuropathic pain treatment, but they are not recommended in children. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and tolerance of lidocaine 5% patches in pediatric inpatients. ⋯ Although lidocaine 5% patches decreased the pain's intensity in nearly half of the enrolled patients with an excellent tolerance, the efficacy endpoint was not reached. Further studies should consider a more refined selection of the experimental population to assess the efficacy of lidocaine 5% patches in the pediatric population.
