A longitudinal analysis of the U.S. Air Force reserve officers' training corps physical fitness assessment.
The U.S. Air Force physical fitness assessment (PFA) is used to determine the overall fitness of their personnel. It is currently unknown to what extent the PFA scores of Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets are affected by mandatory physical training. The purpose of this investigation was to longitudinally examine the PFAs of ROTC cadets over a four-year period, evaluate the results across class ranks, and evaluate the sensitivity of the classification of the tests. ⋯ The results indicated that only the sit-up component showed differences between class ranks. These findings suggest that the Air Force PFA may not be sensitive enough to detect changes in physical fitness or distinguish between class ranks regarding physical performance, even after years of training. This limitation may be in part due to the limited duration of training incorporated by the ROTC program (2 h per week), which provided a maintenance effect rather than improvement in physical performance. We recommend that more attention be directed to the efficacy of physical training, the sensitivity of measures included in the PFA, or both.

Observational StudyThe validity and reliability of the ADL-Glittre test for children.
Objective: The ADL-Glittre was created to assess more comprehensively the essential activities of daily living in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The aim of this study was to validate the ADL-Glittre test adapted for children (TGlittre-P) and verify its reliability. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with 87 healthy children aged 6 to 14 years (mean 10.36 ± 2.32 years). ⋯ Results: The TGlittre-P showed a moderate negative correlation with the 6MWT (r = -0.490; p = 0.002; 95%CI -0.712 to -0.233). However, the behavior of the physiological variables that were monitored during the tests was similar and showed to be reproducible (ICC = 0.843; p = 0.000; 95%CI 0.695 to 0.911). Conclusion: The TGlittre-P proved to be a valid and reliable assessment of the functional capacity of healthy children aged 6 to 14 years.

Observational Study
Reference Equations for the ADL-Glittre Test in Pediatric Subjects.
The ADL-Glittre test (TGlittre) was initially proposed to evaluate the activities of daily life (ADL) of adults with COPD that involve activities with the upper limbs in addition to walking. Recently, the test has been adapted for children (TGlittre-P), but no reference values have been proposed for its use in this population. The main objective of this study was to develop reference equations for the pediatric adaptation of the TGlittre. ⋯ TGlittre-P reference equations were developed for females and males, with age being the most influential predictive variable in the test performed by children.

Peak Oxygen Uptake and Mortality in Cystic Fibrosis: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Aerobic fitness, as measured by peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2 peak), correlates with survival in children and adults with cystic fibrosis (CF). We sought to evaluate the effects of V̇O2 peak on mortality rates in subjects with CF. ⋯ Low levels of peak oxygen uptake are associated with an increase of 4.9 in the risk of mortality in subjects with CF. This indicates that V̇O2 could be an important follow-up variable to measure, in addition to FEV1.

Muscle weakness is an important systemic consequence in adults with cystic fibrosis, but it can be challenging to evaluate clinically. This study examined the validity of lower-extremity functional tests to assess quadriceps muscle strength and muscle power. ⋯ Functional tests can be applied clinically to measure leg muscle strength and power, with the stair-climb power test having the strongest associations with the standard measures. The utility of using functional tests to evaluate longitudinal changes in muscle function and its association with clinical outcomes should be examined in cystic fibrosis.
