Blunt cardiac injury is a rare trauma entity. Here, we sought to evaluate the relevance and prognostic significance of blunt cardiac injury in severely injured patients. ⋯ Multiple injured patients with blunt cardiac trauma are at high risk to be underestimated. Careful evaluation of trauma patients is able to predict the presence of blunt cardiac injury. The severity of blunt cardiac injury needs to be stratified according to the AIS score, as the patients' outcome is dependent on the severity of cardiac injury.

Multicenter StudyThe risk of pediatric bicycle handlebar injury compared with non-handlebar injury: a retrospective multicenter study in Osaka, Japan.
Bicycle accidents are one of the major causes of unintentional traumatic injury in childhood. The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics and risks of handlebar injury in childhood. ⋯ Handlebar injuries in children have significant potential to cause severe damage to visceral organs, especially those in the abdomen.

Incidence and risk factors of postoperative pulmonary complications in noncardiac Chinese patients: a multicenter observational study in university hospitals.
To assess the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in Chinese inpatients, and to develop a brief predictive risk index. ⋯ PPCs are common in noncardiac surgical patients and are associated with prolonged LOS in China. The current study developed a risk index, which can be used to assess individual risk of PPCs and guide individualized perioperative respiratory care.

External Validation for Acute Kidney Injury Severity Scores: A Multicenter Retrospective Study in 14 Japanese ICUs.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with high mortality. Multiple AKI severity scores have been derived to predict patient outcome. We externally validated new AKI severity scores using the Japanese Society for Physicians and Trainees in Intensive Care (JSEPTIC) database. ⋯ Using a multicenter database of AKI patients requiring CRRT, this study externally validated new AKI severity scores. While the Demirjian's score and Liano's score showed a better performance, further research will be required to confirm these findings.

The Differences in the Epidemiology and Predictors of Death between Candidemia Acquired in Intensive Care Units and Other Hospital Settings.
The burden of candidemia is shifting from intensive care units (ICU) to non-ICU settings. This study aimed to define the differences in epidemiology and predictors of death between ICU-acquired candidemia (ICUAC) and non-ICUAC. ⋯ The Candida species and antifungal resistance profiles in patients with ICUAC were similar to non-ICUAC patients, but led to worse outcomes. The protective and risk factors for death may therefore be relevant for the clinical management of patients with candidemia in ICU and non-ICU settings.
