Multicenter StudyHospital for joint diseases participates in international spine registry Spine Tango after successful pilot study.
Spine Tango is currently the only international spine registry in existence. It was developed under the auspices of Eurospine, the Spine Society of Europe, and is hosted at the University of Bern, Switzerland. ⋯ Workflow integration and dedicated research staff are key factors for such an endeavor. Participation enables benchmarking against national and international peers and outcome research and quality assurance of surgical and non-surgical treatments.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyPerioperative management of obstructive sleep apnea: a survey of Veterans Affairs health care providers.
(1) To determine the presence of Veterans Affairs (VA) institutional guidelines for the perioperative management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); (2) to examine current use of preoperative screening tools for OSA in the VA; and (3) to understand current VA practice patterns regarding postoperative disposition of patients with OSA. ⋯ This survey study elucidates the heterogeneity of preoperative screening for and postoperative care of veterans with OSA. Future investigators may use these data to formalize institutional policies with regard to patients with OSA, with potentially significant impacts on patient care and usage of financial resources.

Out-of-theatre tracheal intubation: prospective multicentre study of clinical practice and adverse events.
Tracheal intubation is commonly performed outside the operating theatre and is associated with higher risk than intubation in theatre. Recent guidelines and publications including the 4th National Audit Project of the Royal College of Anaesthetists have sought to improve the safety of out-of-theatre intubations. ⋯ Out-of-theatre intubation frequently occurs in the absence of essential safety equipment, despite the existing guidelines. The associated adverse event rate is high.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyThe effect of hospital size and surgical service on case cancellation in elective surgery: results from a prospective multicenter study.
Short-term case cancellation causes frustration for anesthesiologists, surgeons, and patients and leads to suboptimal use of operating room (OR) resources. In many facilities, >10% of all cases are cancelled on the day of surgery, thereby causing major problems for OR management and anesthesia departments. The effect of hospital type and service type on case cancellation rate is unclear. ⋯ When benchmarking cancellation rates among hospitals, comparisons should control for academic institutions having higher incidences of case cancellation than nonacademic hospitals and general surgery services having higher incidences than other services.

Local variations in the epidemiology, microbiology, and outcome of necrotizing soft-tissue infections: a multicenter study.
Necrotizing soft-tissue infections (NSTIs) are rare and highly lethal. ⋯ Significant center differences occur in patient populations, etiology, and microbiology of NSTIs, even within a concentrated region. Management should be based on these characteristics given that adjunctive treatments are unproven and variations in outcome are likely because of patient disease at presentation.
