Multicenter StudyPrevalence and Detection of Prescription Opioid Misuse and Prescription Opioid Use Disorder Among Emergency Department Patients 50 Years of Age and Older: Performance of the Prescription Drug Use Questionnaire, Patient Version.
Despite increased concern about prescription opioid misuse among older adults, there is limited work examining the best means to identify misuse by older adults. The goal of this investigation was to examine the performance the Prescription Drug Use Questionnaire Patient Version (PDUQp), in detecting prescription opioid misuse and prescription opioid use disorders among adult emergency department (ED) patients aged 50 years and older. ⋯ Based on this preliminary work, the PDUQp may be a viable instrument to screen for prescription opioid misuse and prescription opioid use disorder, but it likely requires modifications to optimize its predictive ability in adults over age 50 years.

Multicenter Study
Genetic variation and cognitive dysfunction in opioid-treated patients with cancer.
The effects of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the cognitive function of opioid-treated patients with cancer until now have not been explored, but they could potentially be related to poor functioning. This study aimed at identifying associations between SNPs of candidate genes, high opioid dose, and cognitive dysfunction. ⋯ The findings did not support influence of those SNPs analyzed to explain cognitive dysfunction in opioid-treated patients with cancer.

Multicenter StudyLong-term safety of fentanyl sublingual spray in opioid-tolerant patients with breakthrough cancer pain.
The current study assessed the long-term safety of fentanyl sublingual spray for managing breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP). ⋯ This long-term maintenance study demonstrated that fentanyl sublingual spray was generally safe and well tolerated for managing BTCP over a 90-day period.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Are strong opioids equally effective and safe in the treatment of chronic cancer pain? A multicenter randomized phase IV 'real life' trial on the variability of response to opioids.
Guidelines tend to consider morphine and morphine-like opioids comparable and interchangeable in the treatment of chronic cancer pain, but individual responses can vary. This study compared the analgesic efficacy, changes of therapy and safety profile over time of four strong opioids given for cancer pain. ⋯ NCT01809106 (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01809106?term=cerp&rank=2).

Multicenter StudyTrends in analgesic exposures reported to Texas Poison Centers following increased regulation of hydrocodone.
In October 2014, the Drug Enforcement Administration reclassified hydrocodone to schedule II, increasing regulations on use. The impact of rescheduling hydrocodone on opioid exposures is unclear, especially in states with special restrictions required for prescribing schedule II agents. ⋯ The increased regulation was temporally associated with decreased hydrocodone exposures reported to Texas Poison Centers.
