Biological evaluation of the effect of sugammadex on hemostasis and bleeding.
Notification of sugammadex has been supplemented with a section on hemostasis, including a longer clotting time in the first minutes following injection, without any documented clinical consequences. The objective of this observational study was to analyze the effects of sugammadex administration on routine coagulation tests and bleeding in the clinical setting. ⋯ In this prospective observational study, the use of 2 and 4 mg/kg sugammadex was not associated with a longer clotting time or decreased hemoglobin concentrations. Future prospective investigations should study patients receiving 16 mg/kg sugammadex and/or with abnormal coagulation tests.

Adults with bleeding disorders may present to their family physician with minor bleeding symptoms or hematologic laboratory abnormalities discovered during evaluation for surgery or another purpose. Identifying the small proportion of adults who have an underlying bleeding disorder as the cause for such signs or symptoms may be challenging. In cases of asymptomatic hematologic laboratory abnormalities, the particular abnormality should narrow down the potentially affected hemostatic component(s), ideally streamlining subsequent investigation. ⋯ Management is further determined by bleeding phenotype and, for invasive procedures, the anticipated risk for bleeding. Consultation with a hematologist may facilitate proper evaluation and treatment, particularly in adults with rare bleeding disorders or no identifiable cause for bleeding. This article reviews the diagnostic approach to hematologic laboratory abnormalities and abnormal bleeding in adults, as well as basic preventive care and hemostatic management of adults with bleeding disorders.

Impact of prothrombin time-International Normalized Ratio on outcome of patients with septic shock receiving polymyxin B cartridge hemoperfusion.
Although most patients with septic shock have a poor outcome, some may survive after blood purification treatment such as polymyxin B cartridge hemoperfusion (PMX). ⋯ Prolonged PT-INR is an independent risk factor for 28-day mortality in patients receiving PMX for septic shock.

Assessment of a portable prothrombin time analyzer (CoaguChek-XS) in dogs.
To assess the performance of a portable prothrombin time (PT) analyzer (CoaguChek-XS) in dogs. ⋯ The CoaguChek-XS is a simple, user-friendly, highly precise PT analyzer. Results had moderate correlation and good agreement with a standard method. It can be used reliably for screening dogs when the PT is normal. However, when the CoaguChek-XS PT is prolonged or when the PCV is ≤25%, results should be confirmed using a standard method.
