Acute Distress Respiratory Syndrome After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Incidence and Impact on the Outcome in a Large Multicenter, Retrospective Cohort.
Respiratory complications are frequently reported after aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), even if their association with outcome remains controversial. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is one of the most severe pulmonary complications after aSAH, with a reported incidence ranging from 11 to 50%. This study aims to assess in a large cohort of aSAH patients, during the first week after an intensive care unit (ICU) admission, the incidence of ARDS defined according to the Berlin criteria and its effect on outcome. ⋯ ARDS has a low incidence in the first 7 days of ICU stay after aSAH, but it is associated with worse outcome.

Short-Acting Sedative-Analgesic Drugs Protect Against Development of Ventilator-Associated Events in Children: Secondary Analysis of the EUVAE Study.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention proposed a shift in its surveillance paradigm from ventilator-associated pneumonia to ventilator-associated events (VAE) to broaden the focus of prevention and achieve a greater impact on outcomes. The main objective of the present study was to identify factors associated with pediatric VAEs in children undergoing mechanical ventilation ≥ 48 h. ⋯ Treatment with short-acting sedative-analgesic agents should be preferred for sedation of mechanically ventilated children in intensive care.

Association between antecedent statin use and severe disease outcomes in COVID-19: A retrospective study with propensity score matching.
Statins have been associated with a reduction in inflammatory markers and improved endothelial function. Whether statins offer any benefit in COVID-19 needs to be elucidated. ⋯ Statin use was associated with significant reduction in mortality among COVID-19 patients. These findings support the pursuit of randomized clinical trials to explore the possible benefits of statins in COVID-19.

Prone position in intubated, mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19: a multi-centric study of more than 1000 patients.
Limited data are available on the use of prone position in intubated, invasively ventilated patients with Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Aim of this study is to investigate the use and effect of prone position in this population during the first 2020 pandemic wave. ⋯ During the COVID-19 pandemic, prone position has been widely adopted to treat mechanically ventilated patients with respiratory failure. The majority of patients improved their oxygenation during prone position, most likely due to a better ventilation perfusion matching.

Ventilation Management and Outcomes for Subjects With Neuromuscular Disorders Admitted to ICUs With Acute Respiratory Failure.
Patients with neuromuscular disorders (NMD) share the risk of acute respiratory failure (ARF) leading to ICU admissions. Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is often proposed as an alternative to invasive ventilation. This study describes clinical features, ventilation management, and outcomes of subjects with NMD admitted to ICU and managed for ARF. ⋯ The ICU mortality of NMD subjects with ARF was low, with no impact of bulbar muscles involvement. NIV was proposed for approximately half of the subjects, and it was more effective when ARF was not attributed to bulbar musculature involvement. The long-term outcome was good.
