Impact of harmful use of alcohol on the sedation of critical patients on mechanical ventilation: A multicentre prospective, observational study in 8 Spanish intensive care units.
To evaluate the impact of a history of harmful use of alcohol (HUA) on sedoanalgesia practices and outcomes in patients on mechanical ventilation (MV). ⋯ HUA may be associated to a higher risk of SF and WS, and can prolong MV and the duration of stay in the ICU in critical patients. Early identification could allow the implementation of specific sedation strategies aimed at preventing these complications.

The number of tracheal intubation attempts matters! A prospective multi-institutional pediatric observational study.
The impact of multiple tracheal intubation (TI) attempts on outcomes in critically ill children with acute respiratory failure is not known. The objective of our study is to determine the association between number of TI attempts and severe desaturation (SpO2 < 70 %) and adverse TI associated events (TIAEs). ⋯ Number of TI attempts was associated with desaturations and increased occurrence of TIAEs in critically ill children with acute respiratory failure. Thoughtful attention to initial provider as well as optimal setting/preparation is important to maximize the chance for first attempt success and to avoid desaturation.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyRisk factors for mechanical ventilation and reintubation after pediatric heart surgery.
To determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with the need for mechanical ventilation in children following cardiac surgery and the need for subsequent reintubation after the initial extubation attempt. ⋯ This multicenter study suggests that proportion of patients extubated in the OR after heart operation is low. These data further suggest that extubation in the OR can be done successfully with a low complication rate.

Validation of the Behavioural Indicators of Pain Scale ESCID for pain assessment in non-communicative and mechanically ventilated critically ill patients: a research protocol.
To investigate the validity and reliability of the Behavioural Indicators of Pain Scale (ESCID) in medically and surgically non-communicative and mechanically ventilated critical patients. ⋯ A greater number of behavioural indicators in the ESCID scale than in previously validated scales, with a 0-10 score range, can improve the detection and measurement of pain in non-communicative and mechanically ventilated critical patients. Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyConservative Versus Liberal Oxygenation Targets for Mechanically Ventilated Patients - a Pilot Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.
There are no randomized controlled trials comparing different oxygenation targets for intensive care unit (ICU) patients. ⋯ Our study supports the feasibility of a conservative oxygenation strategy in patients receiving IMV. Larger randomized controlled trials of this intervention appear justified. Clinical trial registered with Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN 12613000505707).
