In rodent models of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH), the QTc interval is prolonged, reflecting downregulation of repolarizing Kv channels in RV myocytes. The significance of QTc prolongation in human PH is unknown. We hypothesized that QTc prolongation occurs in human PH, is associated with RVH and decreased RV function, and predicts adverse prognosis. ⋯ QTc prolongation in PH patients reflects the status of the RV and is an independent predictor of mortality.

A high prevalence of prolonged QT interval duration has been observed among haemodialysis (HD) patients. The aim of this cases series was to describe the association of various risk factors with total mortality and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in this population. ⋯ In a case series of HD patients, QTc was associated with total mortality and SCD. Further studies to test this hypothesis in a larger population are necessary.

Serum glucose and insulin are associated with QTc and RR intervals in nondiabetic elderly.
To study whether nondiabetic persons with impaired fasting serum glucose and hyperinsulinemia have QTc/QT interval prolongation and RR interval shortening in the electrocardiogram (ECG), and whether these were associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. ⋯ In this population-based study, we demonstrated that IFG and hyperinsulinemia are associated with a significantly increased QTc interval and with significant shortening of the RR interval, the latter probably due to an increased sympathetic activity. In addition, we demonstrated that both a prolonged QTc interval and a shortened RR interval are associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death.

Prolonged QTc as a predictor of mortality in acute ischemic stroke.
We sought to examine the relationship of the QTc interval with mortality and functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke, and determine whether a threshold cutoff is present beyond which risk of death increases. ⋯ There appears to be an increased risk of early death in patients with acute ischemic stroke and a prolonged QTc interval at the time of emergency department presentation. Prognosis appears to be worse with QTc intervals longer than 440 milliseconds in women and longer than 438 milliseconds in men.

Comparative StudyClinical implications for patients with long QT syndrome who experience a cardiac event during infancy.
This study was designed to evaluate the clinical and prognostic aspects of long QT syndrome (LQTS)-related cardiac events that occur in the first year of life (infancy). ⋯ Patients with LQTS who experience ACA during the first year of life are at very high risk for subsequent ACA or death during their next 10 years of life, and beta-blockers might not be effective in preventing fatal or near-fatal cardiac events in this small but high-risk subset.
