Chronic lateral epicondylitis has been treated with various surgical procedures with varying and often less-than-satisfactory outcomes. ⋯ The use of a suture anchor to repair the extensor carpi radialis brevis to the epicondyle after debridement was a satisfactory procedure for recalcitrant lateral epicondylitis with regard to strength, return to previous activities, and pain relief.

Adult umbilical and paraumbilical hernia repair is associated with a high recurrence rate of 10-30%. Mesh repair has been reported to be associated with low recurrence rates. This study aims to compare sutured repair with prosthetic mesh repair to evaluate recurrence and infection rates. ⋯ Recurrence rates for the suture and mesh repair groups were 11.5 and 0%, respectively (P=0.007). Infection rates for the suture and mesh repair groups were 11.5 and 0%, respectively (P=0.007). Our data suggest that prosthetic mesh repair is ideal for managing primary and recurrent umbilical hernias in both obese and non-obese patients.

Economic comparison of methods of wound closure: wound closure strips vs. sutures and wound adhesives.
Our objective was to review and assess the treatment of low-tension wounds and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of wound closure methods. We used a health economic model to estimate cost/closure of adhesive wound closure strips, tissue adhesives and sutures. The model incorporated cost-driving variables: application time, costs and the likelihood and costs of dehiscence and infection. ⋯ The costs for sutures were $24.11, $69.91 and $41.91, respectively; the costs for tissue adhesives were $28.77, $74.68 and $46.68, respectively. The cosmetic outcome for all three treatments was equivalent. We conclude adhesive wound closure strips were both a cost-saving and a cost-effective alternative to sutures and tissue adhesives in the closure of low-tension lacerations.

[Treatment of scaphoid waist fractures by shape memory staples. Retrospective evaluation on 60 cases].
In carpal scaphoid fractures, treatment with screws is considered the gold standard: ostheosynthesis with mini-staples is not the usual choice of treatment. The authors report a study on fractures of the middle third of the scaphoid treated by mini shape memory staples, in order to test the quality of reduction and ostheosynthesis, functional results, time of union and complications. ⋯ Our results show the safety and the practicality of ostheosynthesis with mini shape memory staples in fresh unstable fractures of the middle third of the scaphoid. Stable fixation, continuous compressive force on fragments and the ability to allow early active movement, are the main advantages.
