Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyOutcome of Burns Treated With Autologous Cultured Proliferating Epidermal Cells: A Prospective Randomized Multicenter Intrapatient Comparative Trial.
Standard treatment for large burns is transplantation with meshed split skin autografts (SSGs). A disadvantage of this treatment is that healing is accompanied by scar formation. Application of autologous epidermal cells (keratinocytes and melanocytes) may be a suitable therapeutic alternative, since this may enhance wound closure and improve scar quality. ⋯ Skin elasticity showed significantly higher elasticity (p = 0.030) in the experimental area at 3 months follow-up. We showed a safe application and significant improvements of wound healing and scar quality in burn patients after treatment with ECs versus SSGs only. The relevance of cultured autologous cells in treatment of extensive burns is supported by our current findings.

Unplanned readmission after surgical procedures is an important quality metric. Yet, readmission rates and causes have not been evaluated for patients after transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary tumors. ⋯ CMS, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid ServicesDI, diabetes insipidusSIADH, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone.

Event-related brain potential and postural muscle activity during standing on an oscillating table while the knee, hip, and trunk are fixed.
In this study, a cast brace was used to immobilize the knee, hip, and trunk, and relations between the event-related brain potential (ERP) and postural muscle activity were investigated while standing on an oscillating table. ⋯ All joints of the leg and trunk except for the ankle were rigidly fixed by the cast brace, and the phase differences between body segments were very small in the fixation condition. High correlations between the time of the peak negative ERP and the peak GcM, soleus, and ES activity after adaptation in the fixation condition suggest that attention would be more focused on anticipatory processing of muscle sensory information from the triceps surae and/or ES, particularly GcM, which had the greatest activation.

Multicenter StudyVital Statistics: Estimating Injury Mortality in Kigali, Rwanda.
Globally, injury deaths largely occur in low- and middle-income countries. No estimates of injury associated mortality exist in Rwanda. This study aimed to describe the patterns of injury-related deaths in Kigali, Rwanda using existing data sources. ⋯ Injuries account for 22% of deaths in Kigali with road traffic crashes being the most common cause.Injury deaths occurred largely in the prehospital setting and within the first 24 h of hospital arrival suggesting the need for investment in emergency infrastructure. Accurate documentation of the cause of death would help policy makers make data-driven resource allocation decisions.

Long-term follow-up care of survivors after burn injuries can potentially be improved by the application of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). PROMs can inform clinical decision-making and foster communication between the patient and provider. There are no previous reports using real-time, burn-specific PROMs in clinical practice to track and benchmark burn recovery over time. ⋯ Separately, qualitative comments from the providers included "survey was not sensitive enough to identify that this patient needed surgery for their scars." This is the first report describing clinical use of a burn-specific patient reported outcome measure. Real-time feedback using the ipad YABOQ was well received for the most part by the clinicians and burn survivors in the outpatient clinic setting. The information provided by the reports can be tested in a future randomized controlled clinical study evaluating impacts on physician decisions.
