Morphology and histology of filum terminale (FT) has a role in the pathophysiology of tethered cord syndrome (TCS). This research was implemented to investigate the morphometric parameters and histological structure of normal FT in adult human cadavers and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to correlate them with the pathophysiology of TCS. ⋯ Knowledge of the morphometric parameters and the histological structure of FT are necessary for clinicians who dealing with diagnosis or treatment of tethered cord syndrome.

Increased waist circumference (WC) is an essential component of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Asians have been found to have more intra-abdominal adipose tissue than Caucasians, in spite of having smaller WC. The purpose of this study was to explore whether NAFLD could be used as a surrogate for MetS diagnosis in the normal WC population. ⋯ Subjects with only NAFLD had similarly severe insulin resistance and OR for clustering of MetS components compared with those with only abnormal WC. A considerable number of NAFLD cases, although had severe metabolic disorder, would not be detected by the current MetS definition. NAFLD could be used as a potential surrogate marker for the diagnosis of MetS in normal WC population.

Las cicatrices queloides afectan hasta el 16% de la población hispana y pueden causar un deterioro en la calidad de vida. La mayoría de los estudios previos han estudiado pacientes con cicatrices hipertróficas secundarias a quemaduras. ⋯ Keloid scars have a minimal negative effect on the quality of life of young adults. This effect was associated with the self-report of depressive symptoms; however, the results of this study do not allow to attribute a causal relationship. It is recommended to apply the quality of life questionnaire in young adults with scars.

NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation Contributes to Mechanical Stretch-Induced Endothelial-Mesenchymal Transition and Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Mechanical ventilation can induce lung fibrosis. This study aimed to investigate whether ventilator-induced lung fibrosis was associated with endothelial-mesenchymal transition and to uncover the underlying mechanisms. ⋯ Mechanical stretch may promote endothelial-mesenchymal transition and pulmonary fibrosis through a NLRP3-dependent pathway. The inhibition of endothelial-mesenchymal transition by NLRP3 inactivation may be a viable therapeutic strategy against pulmonary fibrosis associated with mechanical ventilation.
