High-Risk Markers and Infection Rates in Febrile Infants Aged 29 to 60 Days Presenting to an Emergency Department During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
There was an overall decline in pediatric emergency department visits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Caregivers are educated to bring febrile neonates promptly to the emergency department; however, for infants aged 29 to 60 days, there may not be the same urgency especially during a pandemic. There may have been a resultant change in the clinical and laboratory high-risk markers and infection rates in this patient population during the pandemic. ⋯ This study demonstrates a significant increase in the rates of urinary tract infection and bacteremia in addition to the objective markers used to risk-stratify febrile infants aged 29 to 60 days. This supports the need for attentiveness in evaluating these febrile infants in the emergency department.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated risk for poor mental health (MH) outcomes among youth from low-income families and propelled a shift to telemental health. Yet, little is known about barriers to and facilitators of MH care access when services are delivered via synchronous telehealth to Medicaid-enrolled youth. ⋯ Our results highlight the need for flexibility in reimbursement policies that allows providers to optimize MH care access by offering telehealth delivered via telephone and video as well as in-person services, depending on the needs and preferences of youth and families.

Hemodialysis (HD) patients are a vulnerable population at high risk for severe complications from COVID-19. The impact of partial COVID-19 vaccination on the survival of HD patients remains uncertain. This prospective cohort study was designed to use artificial intelligence algorithms to predict the survival impact of partial COVID-19 vaccination in HD patients. ⋯ This prospective cohort study involved using artificial intelligence algorithms to predict overall survival in HD patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. These predictive models assisted in identifying high-risk individuals and guiding vaccination strategies for HD patients, ultimately improving overall prognosis. Further research is warranted to validate and refine these predictive models in larger and more diverse populations of HD patients.
