Hematoma expansion (HE) after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with worse outcome. Lobar ICHs are known to have better outcomes compared to deep ICH; however, it is unclear whether there are HE differences between these locations. We sought to investigate the hypothesis that lobar ICH has less HE compared to deep ICH. ⋯ We identified less HE in lobar compared to deep ICH. The use of absolute growth thresholds in defining HE may be limited when assessing groups with largely different baseline hematoma sizes. Further study is required to replicate our findings and investigate mechanisms for HE differences between lobar and deep ICH locations.

Blood type has become an increasingly recognized risk factor for coagulopathy. We explored the association between blood type and hematoma expansion (HE) after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). ⋯ There may be differences in HE after ICH in patients with different blood types. Further work is required to replicate these findings and identify the pathophysiologic mechanisms behind coagulopathy between blood types after ICH.

The sensitivity to inter-subject variability of the bridging vein entry angles for prediction of acute subdural hematoma.
Acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) is one of the most frequent traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) with high mortality rate. Bridging vein (BV) ruptures is a major cause of ASDH. The KTH finite element head model includes bridging veins to predict acute subdural hematoma due to BV rupture. ⋯ Moreover, the models with maximum and minimum entry angles give an insight of how BV biovariability can influence ASDH. In order to further improve the successful prediction rate, more biofidelic data are needed both with respect to bridging vein material properties and geometry. Furthermore, more experimental data are needed in order to investigate the behaviour of FE head models in depth.

Surgical cricothyroidotomy is a last resort in patients with an anticipated difficult airway, but without any guarantee of success. Identification of the cricothyroid membrane may be the key to successful cricothyrotomy. Ultrasonographic identification of the cricothyroid membrane has been reported to be more useful than the conventional palpation technique. However, ultrasonographic identification techniques are not yet fully characterized. ⋯ In this case, the cricothyroid membrane could be identified using the longitudinal approach but not the transverse approach. It may be ideal to know which ultrasound technique can be applied for each patient.
