Chest compression release velocity: Association with survival and favorable neurologic outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
We evaluated the association between chest compression release velocity (CCRV) and outcomes after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). ⋯ CCRV was independently associated with improved survival and favorable neurologic outcome at hospital discharge after adult OHCA.

What is the outcome of cancer patients admitted to the ICU after cardiac arrest? Results from a multicenter study.
Low survival rate was previously described after cardiac arrest in cancer patients and may challenge the appropriateness of intensive care unit (ICU) admission after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Objectives of this study were to report outcome and characteristics of cancer patients admitted to the ICU after cardiac arrest. ⋯ Even if low, the 6-month survival rate of 14% observed in cancer patients admitted to the ICU after cardiac arrest and ROSC may support the admission of these patients to the ICU and may warrant an initial full-code ICU management.

International variation in policies and practices related to informed consent in acute cardiovascular research: Results from a 44 country survey.
Research in an emergency setting such as that with an acute cardiovascular event is challenging because the window of opportunity to treat may be short and may preclude time to obtain informed consent from the patient or their representative. Some perceive that requiring informed consent in emergency situations has limited improvements in care. Vulnerable populations including minorities or residents of low-income countries are at greatest risk of need for resuscitation. Lack of enrollment of such patients would increase uncertainties in treatment benefit or harm in those at greater risk of need for resuscitation. We sought to assess international variation in policies and procedures related to exception from informed consent (EFIC) or deferred consent for emergency research. ⋯ There is international variation in practices and policies related to consent for emergency research. There is an ongoing need to converge regulations based on the usefulness of multinational emergency research to benefit both affluent and disadvantaged populations.

Cardiac arrest diagnostic accuracy of 9-1-1 dispatchers: A prospective multi-center study.
We sought to determine the ability of 9-1-1 dispatchers to accurately determine the presence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA) over the telephone, and to determine the frequency with which CPR instructions are initiated and chest compressions delivered in patients not in cardiac arrest. ⋯ Dispatchers had a fair sensitivity and modest specificity for the recognition of OOHCA. We found a very small number of patients receiving CPR when not in cardiac arrest, supporting the current use of dispatch-assisted CPR instructions.

Outcomes of asphyxial cardiac arrest patients who were treated with therapeutic hypothermia: A multicenter retrospective cohort study.
While therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is in clinical use, its efficacy in certain patient groups is unclear. This study was designed to describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac-arrest (OHCA) caused by asphyxia, who were treated with TH. ⋯ About half of patients who underwent TH after asphyxial cardiac arrest survived, but a very small number showed a good neurologic outcome. The TH maintenance times were not uniform in these patients. Additional research regarding both the appropriate TH guidelines for patients with asphyxial cardiac arrest and improvement of their neurologic outcome is needed.
