Pathological fracture of the mandible caused by radicular cyst: A case report and literature review.
Pathological fracture of the mandible caused by radicular cyst is rare. This report describes a unique case of a mandibular pathological fracture caused by radicular cyst, arising from an endodontically treated molar. ⋯ This case report highlights the routine follow-up of endodontically treated teeth in order to check for apical healing and detect the cystic change at early stages.

Feasibility of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer fixation plates for treatment of atrophic mandibular fracture: A finite element method.
The objective of this study was to conduct a computer assessment of the biomechanical stability of locking fixation plates of different thicknesses, made of titanium alloy and carbon-fiber- reinforced polyetheretherkotone (CFR-PEEK) in Class III atrophic mandibular fractures. Class III atrophic mandibular models were constructed using three-dimensional finite element models. After simulation of fracture on the left side, plates with different thicknesses (1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm) were adapted to the models and three locking screws on each side of the fracture were used for fixation. ⋯ Von Mises stress values for screws and plates were lower in models using CFR-PEEK plates. An increase in plate profile enhanced the load-sharing performance of the fixation systems, with rigid titanium alloy plates sharing the load among the screws more evenly. 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2.0 mm CFR-PEEK plates produced strain values of 2-10%, which promote proper healing via formation of callus in the fracture line. In terms of investigated biomechanical parameters, and with a Young's modulus similar to that of cortical bone, CFR-PEEK materials appear to be suitable for the treatment of atrophic mandibular fractures.

Meta AnalysisDoes the surgical approach for treating mandibular condylar fractures affect the rate of seventh cranial nerve injuries? A systematic review and meta-analysis based on a new classification for surgical approaches.
The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of facial nerve injury (FNI) when performing (ORIF) of mandibular condylar fractures by different surgical approaches. ⋯ According to published data for CHFs, a retroauricular approach or deep subfascial preauricular approach was the safest to protect the facial nerve. For CNFs, a transmassetric anteroparotid approach with retromandibular and preauricular extension was the safest approach to decrease risk of FNI. For CBFs, high submandibular incisions with either transmassetric anteroparotid approach with retromandibular or transmassetric subparotid approach, followed by intraoral (with or without endoscopic/transbuccal trocar) were the safest approaches with respect to decreased risk of FNI.

Beneficial Therapeutic Effects of Sildenafil on Bone Healing in Animals Treated with Bisphosphonate.
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of sildenafil on mandibular fracture healing in animals treated with zoledronic acid by using histologic, histomorphometric, immunohistochemical, and radiodensitometric methods. ⋯ Sildenafil may have positive effects on accelerating and improving fracture healing, and it may be used as a supporting factor in bone healing in patients treated with bisphosphonate (BP) to prevent negative effects of BP's.

Mandibular Fracture Patterns at a Medical Center in Central Taiwan: A 3-Year Epidemiological Review.
Mandibular fractures constitute a major portion of maxillofacial trauma and may lead to considerable functional and aesthetic sequelae if treatment is inadequate or delayed. An epidemiology study on mandibular fractures may guide the preventive efforts of the Taiwan public health care system. Therefore, a retrospective review was conducted at a medical center in central Taiwan to evaluate the current mandibular fracture epidemiology. ⋯ Compared with previous studies, the present study has a higher percentage of women with mandibular fractures. In addition, inadequate mandibular protection by partial-coverage helmets may be a major reason for mandibular fractures most commonly localized in the symphysis and parasymphysis regions. The incidence and causes of mandibular fractures may reflect the trauma patterns within the community, thus facilitating the development of a preventive strategy for the socioeconomic and environmental background of central Taiwan.
