To evaluate the interest of integrating positron emission tomography (PET) images with the radiolabeled tracer [(11)C]methionine (Met) into the image-guided navigation planning of infiltrative low-grade brain tumors (LGBTs) in children. ⋯ These data suggested that Met-PET guidance could help to improve the number of total resections and the amount of tumor removed in infiltrative LGBTs in children.

The use of virtual fluoroscopy in managing acute type II odontoid fracture with anterior single-screw fixation. A safe, effective, elegant and fast form of treatment.
The management of odontoid fractures represents both a clinical and a technical challenge due to the singular anatomy and biomechanics of the region. At present there is still much controversy as far as any form of management (surgical vs. conservative) is concerned and in any case there is not sufficient evidence to support a standardized form of treatment. This study was designed to further evaluate safety and efficacy of anterior odontoid single-screw fixation and to better determine the usefulness of Image Guided Surgery Virtual Fluoroscopy in treating such cases assessing also its advantages over traditional fluoroscopy and CT-guided frameless stereotaxy in the upper cervical spine surgery. ⋯ We believe that anterior odontoid screw fixation using Image Guided Surgery virtual fluoroscopy is a safe, effective, less time consuming and low x-ray exposure technique and we recommend this as the preferred treatment method for acute Type II odontoid fractures. Moreover, the use of image guided technology affords more precision, confidence and safety enabling the surgeon to approach the upper cervical spine in an easier and faster way.

To introduce the possibility of volume-rendered helical computed tomographic (CT) angiographic data sets by use of Medtronic StealthStation Treon surgical navigation technology (Medtronic Surgical Navigation Technologies, Louisville, CO) and to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the method in planning and performing surgical treatment of intracranial aneurysms. ⋯ Reports in the literature indicate that information gathered by CT angiography with volume rendering shows a significant impact on aneurysm management. The StealthStation system upgraded with the adequate algorithm seems to provide a time- and cost-effective method of performing automated 3-D volume rendering of CT angiography and provides an interesting alternative to the available investigation modalities in case of emergency.

Functional monitoring for visual pathway using real-time visual evoked potentials and optic-radiation tractography.
It has been difficult to obtain anatomic and functional information about the visual pathway during neurosurgical operations. The aim of this study was to combine the information of the visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and the anatomic navigation of the optic radiation by diffusion tensor imaging-based tractography for functional monitoring of the visual pathway. ⋯ We confirmed functional correlations of the results of diffusion tensor imaging-based tractography by monitoring intraoperative VEPs. The combination of continuous VEP and optic-radiation tractography is reliable to monitor the visual function and is helpful in performing neurosurgical planning near the visual pathway.

[Application of intraoperative real-time ultrasound in the surgical treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformation].
To investigate the value of intraoperative real-time ultrasound during surgery of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). ⋯ Intraoperative real-time ultrasound allows accurate localization and navigation of the cerebral AVMs, provides valuable information during surgery, and helps determine the degree of removal of the cerebral AVM.
