Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyMicrosurgery education in residency training: validating an online curriculum.
Plastic surgery training has traditionally been modeled as an "apprenticeship," where faculty teach surgical skills to residents on live patients. Although this is a well-established process, the demand by the public and healthcare agencies for improved patient care, outcomes, and patient safety has led to the development of adjunct methods of teaching. The goal of this project is to assess the effectiveness of a web-based microsurgical curriculum. ⋯ Our interactive Web-based curriculum is a novel resource, teaching microsurgery in an organized, competency-based manner, which we believe is the first Web site of this nature. An individualized, self-paced Web site is ideal for plastic surgery trainees of all levels. Overall, the widespread implementation of our proposed curriculum--online self-directed training combined with regular practice sessions--will establish a strong foundation of microsurgery knowledge and skills acquisition for all plastic surgery residents.

Three-dimensional imaging navigation during a lung segmentectomy using an iPad.
The requirement for anatomical lung segmentectomies has increased in recent years but this surgical procedure is relatively difficult. We herein present the benefits of using three-dimensional (3D) imaging navigation during a lung segmentectomy via the intra-operative use of an iPad. ⋯ A 3D computed tomography navigation using an iPad enhances the ability to perform a safe and secure segmentectomy.

Retrograde drilling for osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) remains a challenging operation. ⋯ The novel method improves a standard operating procedure in terms of accuracy, operation time for the retrograde drilling procedure, and radiation exposure.

To re-assess radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of osteoid osteoma (OO) with an optimized technique and to evaluate patterns of post-interventional pain important for the detection of recurrence. ⋯ Using an optimized technique primary clinical success rates in the high nineties have to be expected. Unspecific pain of low intensity is not unusual after RFA and has to be distinguished from pain caused by recurrent disease.

The percutaneous three-dimensional (3D)-fluoroscopic-navigated screw directing to the quadrilateral plate was attempted. ⋯ The surgical technique of percutaneous screwing for the acetabular fracture with three-dimensional fluoroscopy-based navigation was demonstrated.
