Oxycodone is a commonly prescribed opioid for postoperative pain. However, there has been a marked increase in the use of tapentadol over the previous decade due to a perceived superior safety profile of tapentadol compared to oxycodone. There is limited real-world evidence on the safety of tapentadol compared to oxycodone after surgery. ⋯ Further real-world studies are warranted to determine the impact of tapentadol use on a broad range of patient outcomes. PERSPECTIVE: This study provides an early signal that tapentadol use may be associated with an increased risk of some adverse events and a longer length of stay. Further research is needed to examine the impact of tapentadol use on a broad range of patient outcomes in clinical practice settings.

Observational StudyIncidence and Factors Associated With Post-Sternotomy Pain Syndrome in the National Heart Institute, Malaysia.
To determine the incidence of poststernotomy pain syndrome (PSPS) after open cardiac surgery in 2021. To determine characteristics and assess the severity of symptoms in patients diagnosed with PSPS. To identify factors that can be associated with patients who were positive for PSPS. ⋯ Poststernotomy pain syndrome is a complex issue affected by various factors. Although the pain score may not be as severe as previously believed, it remains crucial to recognize PSPS because a significant proportion of patients are affected.

Attic cholesteatomas can be exenterated by transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES). In the limited operative field of exclusive transcanal endoscopic atticotomy, surgeons use either a piezosurgery scalpel or a drilling system to remove the posterior lateral bony wall of the epitympanum. We aimed to investigate the feasibility of using piezosurgery or microdrill for endoscopic atticotomy during exenteration of attic cholesteatomas. ⋯ Endoscopic atticotomy performed using a piezosurgery scalpel is potentially safer but slower than using a microdrill for exenteration of attic cholesteatomas.

Hip fracture patients are recommended to undergo surgery within 24-36 h. The present study aimed to analyze the current status of hip fracture surgery among the elderly in China. ⋯ The major issues in diagnosing and treating elderly patients with hip fractures in China are the long waiting time for surgery and the low surgery rate.
