While the principles of damage control surgery - rapid hemorrhage and contamination control with correction of physiologic derangements followed by delayed definitive reconstruction - have remained consistent, forms of damage control intervention have evolved and proliferated dramatically. This review aims to provide a historic perspective of the early trends of damage control surgery as well as an updated understanding of its current state and future trends. ⋯ Optimal outcome in the care of the most severely injured patients requires judicious use of damage control surgery supplemented by advancements in resuscitation and surgical adjuncts.

ChatGPT is a novel natural language processing artificial intelligence (AI) module where users enter any question or command and receive a single text response within seconds. As AI becomes more accessible, patients may begin to use it as a resource for medical information and advice. This is the first study to assess the neurosurgical information that is provided by ChatGPT. ⋯ ChatGPT is an adaptive resource for neurosurgical information but has shortcomings that limit the quality of its responses, including poor readability, lack of references, and failure to fully describe treatment options. Hence, patients and providers should remain wary of the provided content. As ChatGPT or other AI search algorithms continue to improve, they may become a reliable alternative for medical information.

Observational StudyThe Perioperative Frontal Relative Ratio of the Alpha Power of Electroencephalography for Predicting Postoperative Delirium After Highly Invasive Surgery: A Prospective Observational Study.
We investigated the associations between postoperative delirium (POD) and both the relative ratio of the alpha (α)-power of electroencephalography (EEG) and inflammatory markers in a prospective, single-center observational study. ⋯ Intraoperative frontal relative ratios of the α-power of EEG were associated with POD in patients who underwent radical cancer surgery. Intraoperative EEG monitoring could be a simple and more useful tool for predicting the development of postoperative delirium than measuring perioperative acute inflammatory markers. A lower relative ratio of α-power might be an effective marker for vulnerability of brain and ultimately for the development of POD.

A scoping review of the literature was conducted to identify intraoperative artificial intelligence (AI) applications for robotic surgery under development and categorize them by (1) purpose of the applications, (2) level of autonomy, (3) stage of development, and (4) type of measured outcome. ⋯ Clinical evaluation of intraoperative AI applications for robotic surgery is still in its infancy and most applications have a low level of autonomy. With increasing levels of autonomy, the evaluation focus seems to shift from AI-specific metrics to process outcomes, although common standards are needed to allow comparison between systems.
